Another ST Option to Moscow

From the Thursday, May 12, edition of The Moscow Times:

"Continental Airlines plans to start a daily nonstop service between the Newark Liberty International Airport and Domodedovo in May next year, making it the second U.S. carrier to fly to Moscow, after Delta Air Lines."

We've heard about this being on again and off again but a concrete date sounds nice! We'll see if it happens.

Yes, but to Domodedovo, rather than Sheremetyevo. The latter is Aeroflot's hub. I don't think Aeroflot operates out of Domodedovo, which means onward connections would be impractical.

It doesn't. If/when CO flies to DME they'll be the only ST carrier over there

so what? SU is not yet a ST carrier therefore there is no difference if you connect from ST airline to SU in SVO, or from ST airline to the whole bunch of other a/c which offer much wider network in Russia (not to mention that even if you manage to fly into SVO on ST airline, to continue your flight on SU domestic you have to change terminals which are 5 miles apaprt).

And thus to reason to rejoice. DME is the home of Sibir Airlines which is the largest domestic carrier in Russia. Transaero is also based there and flies only Boeing aircraft. If one is loyal to only ST airlines, this will allow you access to the 2 largest airports in Moscow and the most comprehensive connections anywhere in Russia the former Soviet Union through DL at SVO to SU and through CO at DME to S7. Seems to be good news all around...

There are 4 airports in Moscow (MOW Moscow Metro RU = DME SVO VKO BKA) and both KL and OK fly into SVO and not DME.
The distance between SVO and DME is over 100 kms (~60 miles), while the distance betwen SVO and the centre of Moscow is 30 kms (~20 miles).
