HKG-TPE using DL miles

You should be able to use DL miles for an award HKG-TPE return on China Airlines. 35k economy, 50k biz, 90k first. But you have to call the SkyMiles desk to book partner airline awards.
Sure beats going via Seoul.

but 35k for a econ seat?? whoa! tpe-bkk is only 20k on KLM (bookable on nwa.com). there goes the free 10k i just earned (given) playing dash to the gate game.

This is one of the highest-competition routes in Asia, so my thinking is that you should look into buying a ticket outright, instead of using so many miles. I bet if you use cathaypacific.com you could find something, though they may be more expensive. Try BR or CI, and also I bet some cheaper 5th-freedom alternatives, like TG, probably fly the route as well.
I'd be surprised if you don't find something for less than $150 in Y, $300 in J. Good luck!
