2. If long-haul flights are likely to be CO/DL (and I find DL transatlantic service to be miserable and uncomfortable), would either be preferable, or is NW or KL worth considering?
At the moment flying direct to the US is about the least appealing option vis a vis connecting in Europe: after the two planes went down in August, the US gov't forced DL and SU to impose extra security checks on their flights from MOW to the US (and if the CO get their flying rights it'll be the same for them). That means arriving to the airport 5 hours before the flight and standing in a long and unhappy queue while everyone else breezes through (relatively) to connect in AMS, CDG or elsewhere

(Oh, and if you have any questions re your move to MOW, feel free to PM me - I live here)

If you do not enjoy travelling in WHY, you should get an OK+ card. AFAIK it is the only Skyteam airline, if not the only airline in general, where Elite status means unlimited space-available upgrades systemwide. Their long-haul biz class isn't up to SQ/CX or even BA standards, but still quite a bit better than eco! Only problem might be limited connections from NYC. I know you can go anywhere in the CO/DL networks with an ex-PRG tkt, but not sure about 3-segment flts.

The question is how significant is a "systemwide" benefit on OK....

Well they do fly to both major NYC airports, which i believe was of interest to the poster asking for info. Their long-haul routes are indeed very few but, since you can enjoy the full Skyteam benefits on AF/KL and the American carriers and qualification levels are quite reasonable, it makes sense to carry an OK card even if you actually fly OK only about 30% of the time.

Try AZ for status matches. They can be quite desperate at times!
