Multi-stop itinerary with one ways
This is probably a dumb newbie post, but here goes.
Wife and I would like to go to Detroit > London, then Barcelona back home to Detroit (cheap RyanAir hopper in between). The trip would be roughly Jan 27 - Feb 8.
Wife has status and miles on Delta, I have loads of miles on Chase Ultimate Rewards.
We'd like to be on Business eastbound and Econ+ westbound.
I found a great outbound flight on Virgin, codeshared with Delta. It seems ideal because my wife can book on Delta and I can book with UR points, at a great redemption value (40k miles for business one way).
The return flight is where I run into problems.
If I do a multi-city search on Delta:
DTW -> LON, BCN -> DTW (Jan 27 - Feb 8)
I get a nice itinerary with the Virgin flight on the way out and either a KLM or Air France codeshare on the way back, round trip main cabin for about $920.
Problem 1: if I just wanted to book this on Delta, for some reason it wont let me select Business outbound and any type of Economy on the return, but it DOES let me select Economy outbound and Business on the return.
Problem 2: Ideally I would just book the Virgin Business-class outbound one way (which is no problem and a great points value), and either one of those KLM or Air France flights in Main Cabin on the way back. If I try that, though, either flight is around $2500 one way
Is there any slick way around this or is this just the vagaries of expensive one-way ticket pricing?
