Using points to upgrade a package flight

Hey everyone. I am looking to book a tour package to Vietnam or Thailand. As part of the package they will book a flight from LAX to Ho Chi Minh City via China Airlines.

After doing a bit of searching, it appears that China Airlines is now a part of SkyTeam. So, my question is: is it possible to use Delta miles to upgrade my Economy China Airlines ticket to Business/First class? And, does it matter that the flight will be booked by a 3rd party?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Jason

You can upgrade the ticket only if it is in the very highest economy fare class (well, the second highest might work, too). It is very unlikely that your package includes such an expensive economy ticket. Packages typically have cheap tickets to be competetive, often they even make use of specifically negotiated fares to be even cheaper than standard fares. So my conclusion is: you will probably not be able to upgrade your ticket. Chances are vitually zero.

CI is in the process of joining Skyteam. It will not be official until late 2012 or 2013.

I am glad to be mis-informed.
