need a transit visa at CAN?

I'm planning a RTW by which I would do something like BKK-CAN-LAX or BKK-SEL-LAX. I know there are no issues at SEL, but what about CAN? I used to always have a Chinese multi-entry visa, but I haven't been in a while and it has expired. So I am wondering if I need a visa to transit? Or if they have an easy overnight visa should that prove to be necessary?

And does anyone know how CZ's service and seats are on the LAX flight?
