Honestly, Y class 3-3-3 seating in B787 doesnt seem to be very comfortable or tempting to me.

i will recomemend b787 aircraft because the dryness in the cabin really big different from old aircraft.whenever i sleep in old aircraft, i always wake up in the mid flight due to too dry in my throat. but i dont find this issue in b787. somemore SQ econ seat pitch is nice for me, 183cm tall

Yes agreed, shame that SQ didn't tread in JL's footsteps and opt for 8 across. I guess the margins are too thin, and this is predominantly this is for short-medium haul routes. Although, to be honest I don't find the seating comfort on the 787's I've been on terribly different to SQ's A330's that they will be replacing.

Singapore Airlines Boeing 787-10 delivery flight

I'll be on the delivery flight of Singapore Airlines' first Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner, so I thought it'd be good to share some of the details for those who're interested.
  • The delivery ceremony proper takes place at Boeing's Charleston, South Carolina facility (where the -10s are assembled) on the evening of March 26.
  • We depart CHS at 2300-ish (emphasis on the -ish, could be a bit after midnight on March 27, and flight number TBA) and will make a short 'tech stop' to refuel at Osaka (no time advised as yet).
  • After that, it's onwards to Singapore for the official welcome event at Changi's JetQuay VIP terminal on the morning of March 28, although the 787-10 will detour via T2 for passengers who wish to disembark at that stage rather than continue onto the welcome event.
  • There will be a seperate invitation-only preview event for SQ's high-rating PPS Club members on the evening on March 28, which is also being held at JetQuay.
And within reason, I'm happy to answer reasonable questions about the delivery flight, especially from a media famil / press 'junket' perspective.

mrfreezetas Feb 23, 2018 1:54 am

I look forward to reading your report as my upcoming SIN-BKK flights in April are now on the 787-10 Dreamliner.

davidj1 Feb 23, 2018 1:59 am

Anyone going on the first flight?

MainlyMiles Feb 24, 2018 9:15 pm

We've rounded up what we already know and various other speculations in this article - including the expected long queues for the economy toilets and Perth launches 7th May with loads of redemption availability.

davidj1 Feb 24, 2018 11:19 pm

Most people try to love the new release product, but my scepticism is in overdrive. Do we need mixed expectations following the A380 new product release, A350 release, and general (non-SIA) 787 flop?

Red flag right here, although has SIA confirmed this in writing anywhere?

Yes, the seat map has been published by SIA showing 5 toilets to 301 economy passengers, a ratio 60:1, compared to 36:1 on current A330 used on regional services.

davidj1 Feb 25, 2018 1:58 am

On the plus side, the business class toilet ratio is better than the A350.

Out of curiosity, how does one get a ticket on such a flight? Engineer, senior Boeing / SIA staff, or press?

Press is so last century. :p

These days it's bloggers that get the invites to the big PR events (or at least those with lots of followers).

I saw the aircraft at the Dubai Air Show in her original Boeing scheme and Boeing Experimental registration. She was all white and shiny with Dubai Air Show stickers on the fuselage on each side.

She was there for the first two days of the trade show only, after which they flew her back to Charleston in the evening to be taken to the paint shop.

Nice looking aircraft. I inaugurated the -8 with ANA and the -9 with Air France. I will miss out on the -10 with Singapore Airlines. I was just in Singapore for the air show. No B787-10.

Makes good sense as they will have her there every day all the time.

;)

Press (although the modern term might be 'media', as 'press' implies print which is sadly losing primacy to online-only, although of course 'online' can as much mean 'traditional' journalism as a blogger or even that idiotic waste-of-space-and-oxygen category of scam-artistes known as 'influencers').

Truer words have not been spoken.

Well have fun on the flight and look forward to photos and your thoughts.

I'm currently booked on the 787 flying KIX-SIN in early may. I'm seated at 18K which is at the back of the cabin. Looking at the exterior of the aircraft I have noticed that there are a few windowless areas on the front fuselage, especially towards the back. Should I worry about the fact that I may have chosen a windowless row? The cabin is very full on the particular flight.

Secondly does anyone know if Seoul will be getting the new 787-10? I'm booked for SIN-ICN-SIN in July which is currently operated by the A330.

djsflynn Mar 13, 2018 2:28 am

As promised, an update on delivery flight SQ8878 based on the latest media itinerary
* departs Charleston at 2100 on Monday March 26
* arrives into Osaka for a tech stop from 0230 to 0330 on Wednesday March 28
* arrives Singapore at 1000 on March 28, with arrival ceremony at JetQuay from 1020

djsflynn Mar 15, 2018 5:30 am

Yeah, now I'm just showing off...:P

This is cover image of the media itinerary received today for the delivery flight of the first 787-10 – Charleston looks quite pretty in the background, a shame the schedule gives us no time to poke around :(

Extensive and photo-laden AusBT review of Singapore Airlines' new regional business class seat now up at https://www.ausbt.com.au/review-sing...business-class

Hipplewm Jun 23, 2018 10:41 pm

CHS is my home airport, nothing better than seeing the line of 787's sitting there ready to go.

I don't think I have been to the airport once this year and not seen a SQ 787 livery represented. China Eastern flew away the other day while waiting for my flight. They are building them fairly quickly it seems.

I had my first experience of the 787-10 last night in J ( SQ918 SIN-MNL), and I'm afraid I was underwhelmed The seat felt mildly claustrophobic; it strikes me that space when you are sitting has been compromised to accommodate the lay-flat feature, which is of questionable value on shorter flights.

CaliforniaSteve Jul 14, 2018 8:30 pm

Anyone know if the 772 replacement will include flights on the HKG-SIN route? I'm going HKG-SIN in late October and the reverse in early December. It would be nice to make that run on a brand new plane.

sofaonasock Jul 17, 2018 11:19 am

This came to me as a surprise as SQ swapped out their 777 for their Dreamliner into NRT from Changi. It was a comfortable night's rest in Business! Their bed is a touch tighter than the 777-300ER

LTN Phobia Jul 17, 2018 12:20 pm

I really like the fact that I can recline the seat without having to sit in a really skewed posture on their 787.

Now I am going out of my way to book the 787 flights whenever possible.

The seat may be a bit narrower than other SQ J seats but you just have to lower the arm rests (I'm fairly narrow so I have not found it to be an issue even without the arm rests down).

cricketer Jul 24, 2018 3:13 am

Flew on 9V-SCF yesterday, seated in 12A. Summary of my thoughts on the seat:

Pros
  • Bed width surprisingly reasonable with the arm rests down
  • Entertainment system worked beautifully - good picture quality, good screen tilt to enable watching while lying down
  • Tray table is really nice! Sturdy, easy to manipulate, and well positioned.
  • Footwell is better than I expected
  • Seat reclines into comfortable positions (caveat: the arm rest comment below)
  • Felt private, but not shut in.

Cons
  • In seat mode, the window-side armrest (left in my case) is awkwardly positioned - further forward than where I would rest my elbow. This was really my one major issue with the seat.
  • wi-fi connectivity to the entertainment failed. This has worked nicely for me on the A350.
  • 3-4 inches of wasted space between the seat shell and the window -- could make the window seats really nice if they had adjusted for that
  • bed length is tight - of course, this is SQ, so not designed for taller people, but you'll really want to be under 6'2" on this seat
  • seat and light controls are slow to respond. More than once I tried again, only to wind up with two taps being registered. Took some getting used to.

Conclusion: I think this is solid short and mid haul business seat. I don't think I could sleep 6-8 hours well in it, but a quick couple of hours would work a treat. Probably my favourite SQ C seat now, though granted I've just had the one experience on an aircraft with < 2 weeks of revenue service.

I was on B787-10 economy yesterday for the second time. Yes, I kind of feel that the economy seat is a bit tight. I got "intruded" by my neighbor many time. I guess because the divider is very narrow. Lucky it was only 2 hours flight (BKK-SIN). I think for KIX flight it may be a challenge.

I was also on BKK-SIN yesterday, luckily it was not me intruding on your space as I had a unoccupied seat next to me which made it comfortable.

ermen Aug 18, 2018 12:05 am

i dont see why people are complaining about the width of the SQ seat in J - seem to fit reasonably well for me and i am not the most petite guy around.

also felt the padding on the seat in bed mode was just right - had a decent rest flying PER - SIN the other night.

Look forward to flying this product again!

OsakaWino Aug 18, 2018 12:47 am

We're excited to be on this 787 for SIN-KIX in Feb, as it will be our first experience on the 787. We've managed to reserve seats 11 D/F, the bulkhead in J, since most of the info I've read recommend this as the best choice for a couple, although we will miss the window from the old A330.

One thing I will greatly appreciate is the side counter isolating the seat from the aisle. We've always been in 11 H/K, the J bulkhead, on the A330, and when the FAs came suddenly through the closed curtain to the galley it always seemed that they were going to bump into me, although this being SIA they never did, unlike the typical experience on UA.

peasant Aug 26, 2018 8:53 pm

Just did a SIN DPS trip on the plane - EY class.

IFE great
Seat width noticably poor.

Would be a struggle on a KIX flight (did that on the A330 last year)

For DPS - this time the availability/ timing worked (last minute purchase, Garuda already full) but for a sub 3 hour flight not worth the premium over Garuda or Scoot. Will actively avoid if possible

I’ve always found the seat width on A330 a struggle and not that different to the 787. Although many like the 330 because of no middle seat on the window sides, which makes it more comfortable. IMHO the 787 (except, I suspect JAL’s 8 across version), the 330 and the 10 across 777 are inferior to the 380 and 9 across 777 - and not really all that different to a narrow body aircraft.

peasant Aug 27, 2018 12:15 am

Fair enough. We usually travel as a couple, so 2-4-2 has advantage over 3-3-3. But the seat width did also make a difference - the 787 trip wasn't that different than the GA B737 we took last time (apart from IFE)

Wife and I will be doing 11D/F for SIN-NRT in late January. It's the red-eye SQ 638 flight though, so I hope the bed mode is wide / long enough for comfort.

We'll be doing the exact same flight in the same seats in late Oct so I'll try to remember to report back.

My wife and I did this end-August in the same seat pair. I found the seat too narrow to be able to sleep comfortably.

Did you happen to lower the armrests for sleeping? Still too narrow? Thanks.

Either way, I think I still prefer this seat from the looks of it as I can't stand that spine twisting foot cubby hole to the side on the A380/A350/77Ws J seat when lounging and not getting one of the few bulkhead seats.

Ooooh that sort of sucks; oh well, would have needed to try it at least once eventually anyway.
