What fare class do "Invols" aka bumps from other airlines book into on UA?

I took a VDB off of a HA flight onto a UA flight.

After getting my MP entered and getting E+ seats selected, I check my itins online. The "fare class" simply says "invol"

But the curious thing (just playing around with this) is that if I had wanted to try to upgrade the flight with miles, the "cost" shows as 8000 miles, not the 15K I'd expected.

Which suggests to me that these "invols" book into fare class Y?

I'd assume that the answer depends on fare basis availability on the protected flight, as I assume if there's same class availability as your ticketed fare basis, it would just transfer to the protected flight. Would also depend on HA's access to UA's GDS and any airline protocols for the rebooking. In the old days, the off-line carrier would have to phone the protected carrier for specific OK and booking instructions before the protected carrier would accept the IDBs/VDBs.

I just took an on-line VDB Monday. Was originally tktd. in V class but the VDB'ing agent upped me to a comp to F on the new flight. After flying, I found that UA rebooked me in rev. F, so probably will get extra EQM/EQS and no e-u/gs were deducted, as promised.

Interesting.

The HA agent originally offered an AA flight; I asked if the UA flight was possible.

He called someone and asked if he could book me on the UA flight and got an affirmative answer.

He then typed and typed and typed and gave me an itin on card stock and told me the HA e-ticket had been pushed to UA.

When I gave the itin card I'd been given to the RCC CSR, she had to hunt for awhile to find it, but she did.

An interesting thing is that the bumped-to flight now shows up on My Itineraries, but it also shows the return HA segments.

Looking at my itin on HA's website, it now shows the HNL-west coast leg is now on the UA flight and continues to correctly show the rest of my return HA segments.

And the booking class shows "Y"

I won't mind getting the 150% EQM/EQS bonus if that should happen

EDIT: And the HA miles for the bumped-from flight have already shown up in my HA account. ^

In my experience, they book into Y, both on UA and on other airlines.

I have the same experience. It's usually Y. Although I've had a couple times when I've been booked into a bona fide C or even F class.

On UA the bigger bonus usually kicks in. On CO, I've gotten double segment value (two, instead of just one "point" per segment for status purposes). Perhaps this makes it "triple-dipping" instead of merely "double-dipping." Yet another benefit of getting bumped.

I have asked a few times to be upgraded to C on bumps and when it happens, it is booked like a full-fare and I have always received the corresponding bonuses.

Happened to me last week. Four of us had MCI-DFW-PVR award tickets on AA, and the MCI-DFW part canceled, leaving no good options to make either a DFW-PVR or an ORD-PVR flight.

So AA called over to UA and rebooked us there. I immediately called UA, gave my MP number, and got us all booked into E+ for the flights. When I got home, I noticed that the segments posted as full Y, complete with the appropriate 2x bonuses for the 25th Anniversary promo.

And for what it's worth, Ted was lovely to PVR. He was happy to see us and he was on time. Although E- was packed, we were able to sprawl out across an entire row in E+. FA's even chased off a couple of seatpoachers. It was much lovelier than the packed AA Mad Dog coming home. RAR!!

I was booked into full-F on UA SFO-MCO after my SFO-PHL US Airways flight (connecting to MCO) was cancelled for maintenance issues. ^

On various airlines I find usually full Y. I was kicking myself earlier this year for not having my DL skymiles number or card handy when bumped from LH to AF (the FFPs I use more regularly I know my numbers off by heart but not DL). Since then I have taken Randy's advice and have a small card with all my numbers on in my wallet, just in case.

I had a recent bump from UA to UA. Will check when it posts what it went to or if it stayed the same class as originally booked.

Its full Y because thats what the receiving carrier bills the other carrier (its much more complex than that, but thats it in a nutshell) ^

I just checked. Somehow it rebooked into a lower class! Not happy.

When I was bumped to UA from LH, but op-up'd to C, my booking class was the same as an upgraded ticket into C. No bonus miles for me

The receiving carrier does not bill the other carrier which is involing passengers to them the full Y. There are various methods of settlement.

Interesting: the miles posted but with only the "regular" 25% Premier bonus; but it posted as 1.5 segments.

The 25% Premier bonus is RDM, not EQM. You should have got 150% EQM/1.5 EQS for a segment booked into Y (or B ...)
