Early reliability issues for UA's 787-9L, Polaris 2.0 Elevated 789

I see that N61101 was taken out of service last Wednesday. It had what looks like a test flight on Saturday (UA4199); UA4206 was canceled yesterday. UA4197 is scheduled to depart from SFO and back at 1830 PT today. I guess its a new aircraft with teething problems.

Ugh. So does that mean one of the SFO-IAH or SFO-IAD training runs is going to be cut early as far as using one of the new 789s?

Since N51104 started revenue flights on Tuesday of last week, there are currently three, active N789Ls. Theyre not being worked that hard!

Also N81105 had its first flight, CHS/CHS, on Monday. So, delivery is imminent, meaning in under four weeks.

N61101 gets back to work on Sunday, when its scheduled to perform UA2498 from SFO to IAH. UA81105 had a second flight, CHS/CHS, yesterday afternoon.

Are these 789s going to continue doing domestic runs beyond April and throughout the year?

It remains to be seen. Based on what appears to have been teething problems with N61101, perhaps newly inducted aircraft will be rotated to Houston and the east coast for a few weeks. I imagine theyll be quickly deployed on international routes. It seems the London from SFO will be next followed by Sydney.

It turns out that N81105 had its third test run earlier today over South Carolina. I expect delivery to be imminent. With five new aircraft, United should have enough to manage two daily flights to SIN and a flight to LHR.

I see that N51104 has been sitting at SFO since Saturday. N61101 is assigned to UA 1 on the 22nd. Assuming it too has teething problems, it looks as if N61103 may perform UA 1 on Thursday.

When the domestic runs were first announced, there were many consecutive days in April and early May with these planes SFO-IAH vv and I believe there was one from IAD as well. Now, some of those dates show either a regular 789 or some other aircraft (777 or 757) operating.

Good thing they have three aircraft in rotation for the one route!

According to a Redditor who was/is on the flight, there was a burning smell from the air vents.
