I purchased the upgrade for LAX-STS for $40 a couple of weeks ago. That turned out to be a bad decision as there were 7 U seats available the day before the flight.

for whatever reason I put the purchase date as 4 Dec rather than 4 Jan, but as soon as I got the confirmation emails I checked the lists … outbound I was 1 of ~15 for 6, return 1 of ~8 for 4

the real irritant was no notification that the return had cleared, so no chance to grab a window seat (yeah, I know, first-world problem)
