HON Circle Lounge in VIE - isn't it a terribly sad affair?
I pased through the VIE HON lounge a few times in the past couple of months. Every time, without thinking too much about it, expecting to have an experience like in Germany or Switzerland, looking forward to a proper meal and a pleasant and aesthetic place to kill time or do something useful (involving power plugs). And every time it was a nasty wake up call. The lounge itself is very uninspiring, whoever designed it must have borrowed his/her ideas from some bus terminal or the waiting room in a public hospital. Eating area with those small glass tables (and paper napkins), ugly armchairs... The buffet is really really disappointing, not much choice and just not inviting to help oneself from those big metal containers where food is simmering since several hours, no made-to-order food...
Just a pity. I have used the VIE lounge a lot several years ago and just don't recall it as being so drab. Is that my memory playing tricks on me or was it better indeed and standards have slipped at some point over the past 3-4 years?

I was wondering at times why do they even keep F lounges in VIE, but then SEN lounges are so bad, it's prolly a good idea to give HONs at least something to the level of SEN elsewhere.

Was there last year twice and didn't find it terrible. Usually alone or with just 1 or 2 more guests the small space is still enough. I do remember seats were not so comfortable, but food and drinks were just okay to kill the 30 minutes wait tome for my flights back to FRA.

). For VIE I'm going from a brief look in, and online reviews (including San Gottardos up here).I did pass through SEN and FTL lounges at all the other LHG hubs (+ LO and LG) and in particular Zurich I'd say looks much more enjoyable than Vienna HON, as far as I can tell. (Provided you aren't stuck in A in a time that can be described by anything than "far from busy"...)

Can't say I spent time there. HON/F I was only lucky enough to catch a ride in Zurich last year (one of these days, hopefully...

Food & Beverage is way better than in any SEN lounge & its never busy, so it has space, tranquility & privacy

Spend quite a bit of time there washing off a serious hangover coming from a wedding accros the border.
Definitely a huge difference compared to the SEN section and I was quite happy with the buffet, nothing extraordinary but surely good enough.
A few more powerplugs could come in handy, I had to open a floorslot to find one.

Was there twice in September.
Very limited catering (when compare to LH or LX F lounges), but very private, no more visitors than I and my companion
Problem was actually with flight to EVN. LD came to tell us that now it is good time to start look for the gate so late, that there was no overhead place for luggage on the board any more. Thank to brilliant OS crew they find a place to my luggage anyway.
Actually the OS crews by my experience until now are perfect fro HON-s.
Another flight out of VIE had apron position, so it was car to plane.
Way from lounge to car is relatively long and tricky.
Car had child-lock on so was funny moment next to plane -- driver waiting outside with my suitcase and I just could not open the door from inside.
Took a good 2 minutes for driver to figure out, that door had child-lock.

HON Circle Entrance and Experience at VIE
For as frequently as I travel, and as much time as I spend time on FT, Ive never seen a recent (circa 2019) breakdown of the HON service at VIE. There are reviews of the lounge, but thats all I can find on Dr. Google.
For the record, this is as HON on a short-haul non-Schengen flight departing VIE. I dont know if the experience is the same for connecting F-pax, but I believe it is.
In short, its excellent. Whilst obviously there is no FRA FCT or ZRH FCL E, I would go as far to say that service-wise its possibly superior to the other LH-Group hubs. For those who may disagree because of the lack of bells-and-whistles, I can say for sure that it is at least definitely more personalised.
For starters, there is an unpublicised (at least I couldnt find info about it online, in English) exclusive HON Circle entrance at VIE at the very far end of the T3 check-in pier. If youre looking at the SEN/C check in entrance, its probably 40-50m to the left of it (the very furthest place one can walk, or enter, the terminal). Get dropped at the very end of T3 if being dropped off by car.
When we walked in, we were greeted with Mr. Vantage03! This is your first time with us in Vienna, yes? I couldnt believe it. They also knew the name of my partner, and wanted to update my profile so they knew all my preferences for future visits. I was blown away. For the record, I have an LH-issued M&M card. They also clarified that.
There was private HON security, which was over-the-top helpful, lifting our bags onto the security screening belt for us (even though we were more than happy to do it ourselves). Everyone was just so friendly and polite, it felt more like old friends than airport security. They also have a huge collection of rubber ducks on top of the security machine, which they said are gifts from their frequent HON guests.. so something to keep in mind if youre passing through!
We easily walked on our own to the HON lounge.
In the HON lounge, they were already expecting us, and we were constantly updated as to our flight status. When it was time to board, the most lovely lady escorted us from the lounge not only to our gate, but to our seats on the (short-haul) aircraft, totally bypassing the seemingly never-ending long jetbridge boarding queue (this doesnt usually happen on LH or LX short-haul).
We were then introduced to the Purser. The whole experience was overwhelmingly personal. Unnecessary? Yes. Much appreciated? YES. It all felt very special. We were having a romantic Christmas markets weekend so I probably was more appreciative than usual too.
Overall for me, if it made sense (acknowledging VIEs geographical location in Europe may not always be ideal), VIE is a verrrrrrry appealing transit airport for HONs over the other LH-Group hubs.
