Delta emulating Southwest?

Today I flew Delta for the first time in years. I was surprised to see pylons in the gate area indicating where each boarding group was to line up.

UA does sort of the same thing. As do BA and LH.

Not a WN thing by any means.

There was/is a lengthy thread on the Delta board re: big changes to their boarding rules pretty recently (since the first of the year). It all looked quite complicated 🙄

Makes you feel real exclusive. You board with 10 folks instead of 40.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this is the definition of 'cattle herding'.

I can't wait for the comments like "I don't fly Southwest because they make you line up like a 3rd grader". See picture above.

Cattle herding or cat herding?

This isn't emulating. This is standard practice at most airlines. They deliniate boarding groups.

TOTALLY different.

You have assigned seats, but boarding is by "class" of ticket - not just first and coach.

As said, long thread on the Delta forum about the recent changes. Folks have had it for years in various configurations.

In the end, they still have "gate lice"

The use of multiple boarding of lanes (more than two) is relatively new at DL. Previously, they just had a lane for Sky Priority, and one for everyone else. There are still in the process of deploying these at airports. For example, DTW still has the old two lane system. They have also changed up the boarding zones starting around the beginning of the year. This post explains the new boarding priority order.

True - adding lanes is new. They have had a similar boarding ORDER for years, but people would just crowd the gate. They adjusted the order a bit and then added these new lanes.

This shows the previous and the new order. Get a drink first.

There are also plenty of places where the Delta pylons don't fit to the assigned gate area and it's the same old scrum.
