I noticed they were starting to get pressure to cut down on these things about a month ago. VDB'd from a connection for 3 hours, and on an afterthought I asked the RCC if they could print me a breakfast/lunch voucher. They did some calculating of the delay first, then remembered that I would have to ask UX at IAD D service desk about it -- they couldn't handle it. D service desk also did some careful figuring of the delay amount, and eventually issued the coupon -- $5.

So, we can't take beverages or many food items (yogurt, jelly) into the airport and when our flight is delayed 6 hours for crew we'll have to pony up our own money for beverages and stuff they pass off as food?

I actually heard about this policy around the time it came out when I had a forced overnight. The CSR mentioned it was ending but was able to print something out for me.

Somehow I don't think that checked bag fees and denied meal vouchers are going to close a quarterly loss of a few hundred million dollars.
UA is just nibbling around the edges with this meal voucher stuff. The BIG changes are yet to come.

The more UA takes away, the easier it is for customers to abandon UA. How about giving us a reason to stay for a change?

United has declared war on its own customers. This business policy will undoubtedly end them up alongside companies that have tried this approach in the past.

So expect to see stiff fuel surcharges on award tickets, perhaps a reduction in the RDM bonus for elite flyers as US has done. I'm sure there are other equally undesirable changes that UA has up its sleeve to spring upon the flying public at regular intervals.

Most of my travel is on an expense report, but I know not everyone at the airport is so lucky and staying overnight/getting rebooked on another carrier/unexpected meals can really eat into their travel budget.
