Update: I owe you all an apology.....

RE: This post count thing in OMNI

When peteropny posted this recently:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=789784

it seemed like a topic that i have mentally used the "ignore Topic" in the past about (who needs technology!). So i went to OMNI and looked at the rules which say that posts do not count and then went to the link there to see that indeed i did make that decision 4 years ago. Simple? Well, sloppy for myself. I did not consider anything in the meanwhile and certainly should have paid more attention to what peteropny had actually said rather than just the highlights. As it turns out, indeed post counts were counting and it appears I did make a change, though I certainly do not remember it. Here is that post by me in which i mention my change:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showp...8&postcount=12
(special thanks to wr_schwab)

I wholly own up to making this mistake and leave you with my apology on this matter. The only thing I can think of is that I'm the benevolent dictator trying to please all the people all the time, but not consciously trying to be wishy-washy.

Anyway, I have reviewed my current decision to enforce the decision of not counting post counts in OMNI and have decided for the best interests of FlyerTalk to stay with my current position of not counting them.

So indeed I do make mistakes and have absolutely no problem owning up to those mistakes - so prepare the gangplank. But I still think my batting average is better than 51% for the good of FlyerTalk.

You don't owe any of us an apology. It's your enterprise. You are human and allowed to make mistakes, and we'll still love you.

However, seeing your apology had my heart racing thinking/hoping you were going back to post counts.

I'm afraid your current decision to enforce the decision of not counting post counts did not solve the divisiveness we're seeing over in TB and elsewhere on FT...

Randy, sounds good. But can we have some consistency on this issue?

How about not giving post counts for CommunityBuzz, Talkboard Topics, Technical Issues, the Delta Forum Lounge, etc. etc. None of these have to do with the mission of the website (points and miles) after all.

Thanks.

If you start picking and choosing to such a degree IMHO you might as well simply do away with post counts altogether. I, for one, am quite happy with the way things are now and see no real need at all to change anything else beyond OMNI.

Works for me and the many others who have supported his decision all along.

Thank you, Randy!

take a deep breath:
we now have the consistency that i think was reasonable at the start: i.e. if a public forum has a restrictive membership level, posts do not count, just as The Coupon Connection is.

threshold = no post count = consistent

Then remove all post counts for all OMNI posts for all time. Otherwise, newer members will think those with 30K posts earned them outside OMNI since posts do not count there.

(It sounds to me like you are making up a rationalization for your decision after the fact, however.)

You learn something new every day

I never knew CC didn't count either.. not that I care regarding omni post counts either; as omni for me is there for getting non-travel questions answered, discussing College FB, and entertainment.. not for post count.. i've never cared about post count so this doesn't phase me in the least bit, neither does it if RP decides to remove the omni posts that have accumulated via omni..

from my perspective, no apology was ever necessary.. thanks for letting us enjoy this site as it is.. again.. who cares about post counts.. well at least after you are omni enabled

Can you point to any single thread in one of those forums where an individual poster has posted as many times as in one of the OMNI number counting thread? Here's the top 5 posters on one of the number counting threads this a.m. Can you find a single thread in any of the forums you highlighted where a poster has even 1,000 posts there? 500?

Or at least those in the OMNI games. I'd still like to see an OMNI Games Forum. Last night when I checked OMNI there were 8 threads in a row bumped up by a single poster that I'd consider games.

Sure, Dovster has close to 2000 posts in the Delta Lounge forum.

Evidence that this action taken by Randy has done nothing to curb the OMNI game problem.

Back to the drawing board?

Yup, I do. And they should be removed from my post count -- along with all Omni, TS&S, TalkBoard Topics. etc., posts. What should remain are only the posts from the Miles and Points Forums -- and even there, the mods of a particular forum should identify those threads which are really just socialing ones and remove the posts on them from post counts as well.

Among other benefits, this will lower my post per day average to a much more respectable level.

I love that Dovster and I can finally agree on something ^
