My favorite hotel in London hands down is the Stafford - luxurious, great services, and simply a very special place.

I'm one of the One Aldwych fans on the board - location superb for both business and pleasure. Service is excellent. To be fair, the hotel is on the verge of needing a makeover - and on one recent trip, when it was sold out, I went to Browns and was very impressed. On balance, however, OA is still my leading choice.

Just a note about the Stafford - there is a very large range of decor and style in the rooms - all rooms are definitely not in the same style. The brand new Mews area in the courtyard behind offers simply gorgeous accommodations, new, elegant, modern, and nothing like the classic English decor of the main building and Cotswold rooms. You can view pictures of the Mews accommodations on the hotel website.
Best,
Ellen

That's true, but the major construction project next door is so noisy that it is very disconcerting and can ruin one's sleeping late.
I have heard that the rooms in MO Hyde Park are dated and they need renovation

I was only in one room, not a suite and probably not upgraded; but it was large and up-to-date as far as I could tell. But then, I might be the one who is not up-to-date!

Claridges is nice, but it's just so damned long. Added, when you're constantly being hit with the 'every room is different' pitch from the staff, it makes you want to stab someone with shards of the Dale Chihuly in the tea room.

I like The Berkeley a whole lot. Also, if you're a fan of staying in Knightsbridge, I'd recommend the Mandarin-Oriental. If design is primo for you and you can sacrifice some level of service, I'd say try a suite at St. Martins Lane. If you're a hotel-workout kind of person, I will say that they have an incredible new GymBox facility inside of the hotel. Absolutely stunning.

How is 51 Buckingham Gate? I see Virtuoso has some great perks at this hotel. I am looking for a good deal for 3 nights at the end of the month. Any other recommendations for London?

51 is not one of Taj's best, and they are the first to admit it. However the service is very good and they do a great organic breakfast. It's a good place for long stays as the rooms/suites have proper equipped kitchens. The hotel is more of a bunch of apartments with hotel services, situated in a lovely quiet courtyard near Buckingham Palace. The two main buildings are decorated in different styles - one traditional and the other contemporary. Think it's the King's Building that's best. Beds are a bit hard, but it's not a bad choice.

Much better are Covent Garden Hotel, Charlotte Street Hotel and Soho Hotel.

My wife and I stayed at the Soho Hotel about a year ago and loved it. Gorgeous, charming room, great service (for London), and we loved the location as we spent a lot of time walking around the neighborhood and beyond. The concierge was also very good with our requests such as arranging our transportation to the Fat Duck, etc. It's not a large hotel, and we enjoyed the coziness of it. The library is small, but comfortable, and the drawing room is great for tea and reading the paper before you head out, or a drink at the end of the day.

Do note that occasionally there will be paparazzi posted at the entrance as that happened once during our stay. Apparently the cast of "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" was staying there for the premiere, and one afternoon an event promoting the film was held in the library, which posed a minor inconvenience. Seeing "Mini-Me" roaming around, however, perhaps made it worthwhile.

One perk we enjoyed was on more than one occasion we stumbled across another Firmdale hotel during our walks, and as a guest of the Soho, the other hotels gave us guest privileges there as well, and we were also able to charge our drinks or services back to our account at the Soho, which we thought was a nice gesture.

Overall, I highly recommend the Soho.
