I asked someone in Onepass management about this and received the following response:
(emphasis added by me)
The best thing to do is have some kind of activity in your account every 12 - 18 months. This protects you from having your miles expired and also keeps you in our active member database. Being active in the program helps you stay in touch with what is happening in OnePass and improves your chances of getting a targeted promotion.
To date, we have not expired miles due to lack of activity, but things can change. Therefore, we have the language in place in our T&Cs.
The date the account was created is not a factor.

With the addition of CO and NW to the SkyTeam alliance, I'm now hoarding all my DL/CO/NW activity into my DL account (where I have the bulk of my miles anyway), leaving my CO account more-or-less untouched. Ms. JPT rarely flies, but she doesn't want to lose her CO miles. Consequently, we're going to take advantage of some of the partner shopping activities.

7 miles per dollar spent at Target?
10 miles per dollar spent at Godiva?
20 miles per dollar spent at USubscribe.com?
We can get a sub to Consumer Reports for $26 and earn over 500 miles for something we were going to do anyway, and we keep her miles alive that way. Too easy. ^

Hmm... any thoughts on ways to spend the miles? I would feel silly spending money to get miles into CO every 18 months just in case I ever get the 25,000 needed for the cheapest award.
To be honest, I probably won't worry about it though, and just hope that they don't expire.

Received a letter this week saying that I would lose the miles if I don't use them in the next month. Now the only question is if one magazine subscription is enough to add account activity, or if only earning counts.

Hi grouse, although we do state that OnePass accounts that are inactive for 18 months may be closed, I will say that we are not currently enforcing this policy. In fact, we've haven't closed a single OnePass account as a result of this policy. And while we can't ever say "never" when it comes to account expiration, this is how we're doing things today.

Thanks CO Insider.
For what it's worth, I haven't actually *seen* the letter, but I was told "Continental says you will lose unused miles if you don't redeem them before 5/24/7. (it says all this on the outside of the envelope, i haven't opened it)"
I signed up for e-miles, which should hopefully be a few hundred miles anyway.

Just sleazy marketing
Look carefully at that letter. I have a similar-sounding letter that strongly implies that the miles will expire if not used by a 5/24 deadline. But buried in the fine print under the listing of available magazines is this: "Failure to respond will not result in forfeiture of miles."

I just got the magazine offer and it seems to have been cleaned up. It just says final notice before 12/15/07 and must be postmarked by the same but in the body of the letter it only says "Don't let your CO OnePass miles remain unused any longer.......
No more threats of expiration.
But it did get me to look at my account which I have not used for some time and I am worried about losing my existing miles. So I just signed up for the 20k credit card promotion.

I guess they have to pay for the lifetime status idea somehow.

Glad it got you looking, but in reality they've admitted that they are not enforcing the 18 month expiration, though they reserve the right to do so. Your miles would've been fine without the CC.

is this mag subscription sent by CO? or any subsidiary or Operating unit affiliated with CO???
my son rec'd the same email for magazines which made me log into his account today 11/19/07 to see when his last activity was.. so as I log in.. i get the update and the agreeing to t&C's which I for once decided to read and I noticed this under
One Pass Program Rules
Mileage Expiration
Miles currently have no expiry date; however, Continental Airlines reserves the right to impose expiry limits or terminate the OnePass program, thus terminating your ability to claim rewards.
I was under the impression that it was now 18 months...

My One Pass account has been inactive for more than 18 months (120,000 miles). Tried to access it yesterday and could not (possibly had wrong PIN), so requested the PIN online and rather than an email back, just got referred to the Customer Service Centre. Have sent an email asking for access .... we will see ....
