Really cheap cross-country fare (EWR-LAX)!
I stumbled across this by accident: Fly EWR-CVG-LAX on May 23, returning LAX-CVG-EWR overnight on May 27-28. The ROUND-TRIP fare is $165.09. That is not each way! I wanted to leave on Friday, May 24, so my ticket was $184.10 -- just slightly higher. I can't remember the last time I saw cross-country fares under $200. Of course, these are U fares, but at that price, I won't complain.

Add $115 to take the red-eye return on a K fare.
Also, $386 total for K all the way.
Anyway you cut it, a bargain! And Memorial Day Weekend to boot!

Bruce, I just did a $235 L fare JFK-LAX. It was a DL fan fare. What you have found is really cheap! Of course, it goes without saying that many of us are spoiled and want that upgradeable fare for the comfort level.

Appreciate the heads-up Bruce! Now if only CO would slass their JFK-LAX prices then I'd really be happy.
FYI JFK-LAX $300 (U); $467 (K).

Absolutely not flying CO--nothing like a 738 transcon!
I was refering to the fare war between DL and CO. Right now you can take DL for practically nothing EWR-IAH. On EWR-LAX CO has several non-stops a day, where as JFK-LAX on CO you have to connect. So if CO would drop their JFK-LAX to $166 I am sure DL would match...

CO has no direct service from JFK. You have to connect in CLE. Therefore I don't expect DL to lower the price of their non-stop transcons to match CO. If UA & AA were to lower their fares JFK-LAX, then you would see DL follow the pack.

Last Friday DL had it for $158 roundtrip ($184.10 to $185.60). I saw the fare today but had already purchased my ticket then for Memorial Day weekend (actually 9 of us). Going out overnight from LAX-CVG-EWR on 5/22 at 11:15 PM and returning the last flight on Memorial Day at 6PM EWR-SLC-LAX. I paid $185.60, still a great deal but would love to have gotten it for $20 less (my return flight is not included in this sale but the flight at 5:40 PM through CVG is).
I can't complain though, I got 9 rooms for the new W Times Square for the $25 misposted rate per night (that they are honoring) for those 4 nights over that weekend (as seen on the Starwood thread here) so I have been looking for a cheap fare to go with it.
CO has LAX-ATL for $138 roundtrip and LAX-BTW is $129 roundtrip. DL has $138 roundtrip to LAX-AUS, LAX-IAH and LAX-HOU among others I have seen...ONE DAY ONLY today from reading the fares...

My point was that DL has no non-stop service EWR-LAX, you have to connect, but they (DL) lowered the EWR-LAX fare to get at CO. I am hoping for retaliation from CO on DL's non-stop JFK-LAX.
DL selling EWR-LAX for $166 doesn't really hurt them because very few people probably buy EWR-LAX on DL. But having to match $166 hurts CO and their 5? non-stops EWR-LAX on which they are probably accostomed to selling seats for closer to the fares DL is currently charging non-stop JFK-LAX.

I used to fly the JFK-LAX non-stops several times a year, but I may stop doing that, for at least two reasons:
1. The fares out of Newark are sometimes MUCH cheaper, as was the case in this instance. (I always check Newark, just to be sure I'm not missing a bargain.)
2. Delta's JFK terminal is so awful with the new security regime! The whole terminal is "sterile," so even checked bags get x-rayed and inspected, and you can't even check "forbidden" items without an elaborate procedure. Making matters worse, you have to stand in long lines outside waiting to be screened. It's just ridiculously unpleasant, and I won't do it if I can help it. There have been other threads on this topic.
Newark is no picnic, either, but if I can save some money and have just a routinely bad security experience, I'll choose Newark over JFK.

AA just emailed me a $302 online purchase price through 4/10/02 for off-peak travel on the JFK-LAX route. Let's see if DL follows, and if they do, if it upgradeable or not.
