Surprising my wife with business class

We’re going on our 20 year anniversary soon to Scotland… I got us an upgrade from DFW-LHR on business class but haven’t told her…..would love to hear your ideas and experience on surpising your spouse with an upgrade like this… it’s our first time flying outside of the cattle car.

AA B777-300er. 1059pm departure from DFW. But we’ll be connecting from SHV so may not have time to stop at the DFW Lounge. Scheduled to arrive DFW 940pm

Don't surprise her. Just tell her in a very low-keyed way, "I got our seat assignments and got some good seats. These recline more so we may be able to fall asleep."

If pressed, you can say "they're called Flagship seats".

Don't even tell her. Especially since you may not get to visit the lounge. Just let her see when you turn left! That is the BEST! Also, AA has a nice arrivals lounge at Heathrow, so be sure to stop and shower and get some breakfast or lunch--just because you CAN!

Seconding this. The only reason to tell her before you get on the plane is if you want to visit the lounge prior to our outgoing flight. Much more of a surprise to remember if you you keep it to yourself until you actually board.

Don't saying anything. I just did something similar with a 12 hour flight but we were PS. We went to airport a bit early and then to lounge. I said something silly about having access. We enjoyed ourselves then went for a pre-departure walk. When we boarded I let my spouse go first as the FA like to direct PAX. Upon arriving at the seat a big smile arrived.

Have a few whines about various things..."oh I wish we had more leg room"! Hype the excitement up.

Super fun for you both.

This is so sweet. 👏
When you have boarded perhaps you can tip off the FA that its your anniversary & also your first time up front & that it was a surprise. Hopefully they will make it special.
Happy Anniversary and Bon voyage!

Incredibly sweet, happy anniversary to you both.

100% concurring with everyone about that you just don't say anything until the FA directs her left.

If you can make it into the DFW lounge, just say you got a free CC Lounge pass, conspicuous and easily passed.

I am a bit sadistic with going as far as possible with surprises, If I was in your shoes, I'd go even farther and board with the usual Y group as if nothing changed.

Aweesome replies!! Thank you guys.

Question about the Lounge at Heathrow. We’re actually connecting at Heathrow and onto Edinburgh on BA with a four hour layover. We’ll be going from terminal 3 to terminal 5 in Heathrow. Will I be able to access any of the lounges there? I only upgraded the leg from DFW-LHR

Yes, under oneworld lounge policy you get lounge access on a connection to/from 5h+ segment if the long-haul is in Business.

https://www.oneworld.com/airport-lounges

Connecting between oneworld marketed and operated flights: First and Business Class customers connecting on the same day of travel, or before 06:00am the following day, can access the lounge when travelling between an international long haul (a oneworld international long haul flight is defined as an international flight marketed and operated by any oneworld carrier with a scheduled flight time longer than 5 hours) and an international short haul or domestic flight (and vice-versa).Lounge access will be determined on the international long haul ticketed flight (either First of Business Class) regardless of the ticketed class of travel on the international short haul or domestic flight. You must be prepared to show your boarding pass for travel in First or Business class on the international long haul flight, in order to access the lounge before your international short haul or domestic flight.

Just to add a bit about the BA lounges - there are two business lounges in T5A (North and South) and a third one in T5B which is usually quieter*, but getting to/from it requires careful planning and some extra time (see the BA forum if interested).

For a first visit to T5, I would check the occupancy of each lounge - there are screens showing this and also accessible by web page at https://ba-uk-occupancy.livereachmedia.com/

*When writing this, I checked and T5B is rammed - the word must have got out!

If I were your wife, I would like to enjoy the anticipation ahead of time so my vote is to tell her now so she gets the pleasure now and the day of the flight.

I have purposely boarded at the last minute. That means you can sit down and not have riff raff walk past you (if a narrow body with the exit in the front, not the #2 exit, if it exists)
