Why is the United App such a disaster for international travel
Got a trip overseas. Days ago I entered all my docs. Got all the green checks and was deemed travel ready.
Go to check in today. Have to start all over. It starts with a REAL ID reminder? Seriously? ...udge?
Move on to verifying my Passport, which I did days ago.
Get to the upload for my VISA, and the apple phone app goes white screen. Try to use my iPad and when I get to the VISA upload, it crashes out and closes the app.
All for stuff Ive done already.
The iPhone app has been a complete mess lately. It hangs all the time when trying to access new screen or options. Trying to change flights two weeks ago just crashed and I had to call in. THe united App
Now I get a text message to check in for my flight. Really, no crap. What have I been trying to do for the last 20 minutes.

Sorry that you had a bad experience. My last international trip on UA was to Singapore last November and loading all of my documents into the TravelReady Center ahead of time made things super smooth at check-in. YMMV, I suppose.

Exactly the same experience as you described. Eventually, it allowed me to check in when I decided not to upload the visa. I got printed boarding passes at airport, but no electronic counterparts in App.

Depends on destination - yes, you have to flash your passport before getting on an international flight from US, but that's the first time I take it out if I've used online check in and I'm carrying on for a lot of countries.

I haven't had to produce docs for inspection at check-in or the airport for a long time. Sometimes, they ask to see passport (quick glance) when at the boarding door, but that isn't always done either.(I think when they use the biometric boarding they don't always ask for passport).

I just had a bad experience too, same issue with scanning a passport a few days ago and having to verify again. App says I'm checked in (verified in app flight status page) but unable to get my boarding pass and no message or email saying go to counter (super weird to not even have that) to get them. Not sure what is up. Thinking maybe SSSS but the app says I am still TSA Pre eligible which I thought was taken away if you get on SSSS.
Sorry to hijack the thread but just sharing that I've had some issues with the app for intl check in too.

It eventually took it. I turned on and off the device and updated to iOS, though I think it was just an update, not a version. I saved my BPs to the apple wallet, but I wouldnt mind BPs, especially for the Emirates flight.

I dont know what happened, but I eventually got it to work, I think
My thing is that the international stuff is one thing, the App has been a mess for the past few months. The new UI is nice, but the functionality is crappy.

I had done the same thing, was a good boy and uploaded everything and got the OKs. Through all this Ive acknowledged REAL ID like 5 times. And entered my citizenship and residence more than that.

I've had no issues with the app in the past few months including international travel - iPhone user as well. Visa requirements may make the workflow more error prone, though I've not gotten the Real ID reminder in a long time either so it's odd that it is still popping up in yours unless you don't have one yet?
Last international trip was in December to Japan and no issues with using the travel ready center in advance of check in - though all flights were on United (no codeshares or other complications).
What other bugs are you impacted by? I haven't noticed any with all of the new features and quite regular usage.

This thread belongs here: United App: discussion, bugs, ... (Android , IOS, ...)
You'll notice I already commented on many of the same issues on a domestic itinerary earlier this week. The "RealID reminder" froze the app several times; I got asked to join MP (hahaha); no Touchless icon because it thought I had no FF# which of course I did as my status appeared on the BP!

The thread title is over the top but the anecdotes here definitely concern me. The app has been a very strong suit of UA the last several years.
Maybe they need to focus on strengthening what they have and lighten up on the feature expansion within the app for some time.
And everyone should have at least a Gen 15 iPhone or newer
