Effective January 15, 2026, AirTrain service to/from the Airport Train Station will be unavailable daily, Monday through Friday, from 5:00AM to 3:00PM, due to AirTrain Newark Replacement Program construction activity
- Shuttle Buses will provide transportation for customers arriving via NJ Transit or Amtrak rail from the Airport Train Station to all Terminals (A, B, C), Rental Cars, and P4 Daily Parking.
- AirTrain service will continue to run between all terminals.
Planned complete AirTrain shutdown - shuttle buses will be provided.
- 8:00PM on Saturday, January 24 to 7:00AM on Sunday, January 25
So the shuttle loop currently planned is (https://www.newarkairport.com/announ...nReplacement):
Airport Train Station
→ Terminal B
→ Terminal C
→ Terminal A Station for Rental Cars
→ Terminal A
→ P4 Daily Parking
The 62 bus stops at the terminals generally in the reverse order, so when departing from Terminal A I imagine the 62 bus is always better, and arriving at B or C the 62 bus is probably better.
Doesn't seem like they have confirmed yet whether they are charging or not charging during the closure and adjusting the built-in fares appropriately. They really shouldn't charge, this is so substandard, but that requires minimal coordination with NJT/Amtrak. One could always buy a ticket to Elizabeth, disembark at EWR, and pay the Airtrain fare at the turnstile (tap to pay) if needed.
The port authority really should shuttle to/from Newark Penn like they've done before (e.g., this past summer) with complete shutdowns.

EWR Airtrain construction starting 15 January 2026
Starting Thursday, Jan. 15, the AirTrain route connecting the airport rail station to the terminals will be closed on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.
First segment of construction to last four months.
So pretty much forget the Airtrain for the next 4 months.
I know there is a bus from from Newark Penn, is that still the best public transit option?

When the airtrain was down in past, I thought they ran buses from the air train station to the terminals, so you could still utilize the EWR NJT station.
There wasnt announcement of such buses, or are they shutting the whole thing down?

Is this build the long-discussed AirTrain replacement or to do maintenance on the existing one? Sorely hope its the former.

Are they still charging the ridiculous fee for taking the shuttle bus? Since you don't have to go through the turnstiles (I'm assuming)? I fly out of EWR often but I get there early enough to save a ton of money and use bus 62 from Raymond Blvd @ Newark Penn. If they aren't charging the stupid access fee I'll take NJT straight to EWR and hop on the shuttle bus.

You still end up going through the access gates on the bridge to/from the rail platforms, so I'm guessing they'll still collect the $ to pay for the bus operation (and help pay for the re-build).
