KLM charging Credit Card fee on Revolut?

Hi,

When trying to book a flight yesterday I found that KLM is charging around €22 on credit card fees using my Revolut Mastercard. Strangely enough, there was no fee when I put in my Revolut Visa details (I have 2 cards with them). Also my 'real' credit card through my regular bank didn't have a fee. I thought charging credit card fee's on consumer cards is no longer allowed in the EU? Is this a glitch or should I ask KLM/Revolut what's going on here?

What I was trying to do: if booked through Skyscanner via their affiliate link and paid with Revolut card, you should get extra rev-points. If it works, it should essentially give 1,5 miles/euro with my Revolut Metal. But they only pay out the points once per week, so I'll know on Monday if this works.

Yes, it should not happen on a consumer card.

What it looks like is that your Revolut mastercard has been issued under a number scheme for corporate cards and therefore KLM and/or Adyen(or whoever else is currently their payment provider) thinks the card is a corporate card.

You can try looking up the first six numbers of your cards in a BD like https://www.bindb.com/bin-database this one, but it's not guaranteed it will show result (it only shows for a subset of cards).

But doesn't the regulation on prevent fees on cards issued within the EU? I have cards from the US, UK and India besides the ones from the EU (Revolut, Amex, Wise, etc.) and I always see fees on the non-EU ones but not the EU ones.

A Revolut card would be an EU issued card, but even EU issued cards can be charged extra fees as long as they are not personal consumer cards.

I do not know if the processors are limited from charging non-EU personal cards, presumably not.

The fact that it has multiple countries/levels/types attached to the first six number is probably the cause, even though the issuing country is Lithuania. I guess I'll have to contact KLM to correct this issue and I'm afraid it will take some time.

As far as I know. For EU Amex and EU Dinersclub cards, even the consumers ones, extra fees are allowed.

My EU personal Amex is without fees, and so was my EU personal Diners Club while I still had that.

With certain credit cards, you can also charge your fees per payment (transaction fees):

American Express, Diners Club, and other credit cards without an intermediary (three-party scheme);
business credit cards, such as business cards and business fuel cards

When I went to a restaurant in Křbenhavn last week, they charged me a surcharge for using my German Mastercard issued from my bank (not a fintech bank, a brick-and-mortar bank). I was a little peeved they're allowed to do that to a EU issued bank card, even if Denmark uses the DKK.

But I've never seen a surcharge when buying KLM, that's a first for me.

They're not allowed to do it if it was a consumer card. These surcharges are common in Denmark but should only apply to non-EU cards and possibly company cards.

Can confirm the Skyscanner to AF/airlines route works well. Sometimes you do need to chase Rev to actually get the points but the call/live agents are quite good in my experience. Usually credited directly after letting them know. Also used them with their other affiliate links and am very happy so far. They recently added links to actual hotel websites so can get x points on Rev and qualifying nights.
Booked Trip .com first via the FB link but am still waiting for my points and already emailed and called several times. With Rev it got credited immediately and the points:money ratio tends to be better (fluctuates every week).

As for payment; noticed the same. Also with the actual charging of the card it sometimes looks normal and sometimes a bit messy with reversals etc but never gave a problem and always resulted in the correct amount. Have been using Rev-Skyscanner since they became a partner on well over 12 I think (a lot in any case). No noticeable difference

I only have one bank card and a Giro card (which i only use for Euro purchases)....so yeah it was a personal card. I know business cards incur fees.

Annoyingly I get dinged with a FX fee from my bank for DKK but not SEK even though both are part of the EU.

Actually, just checked as I had to book a ticket but no charges on Mastercard or Visa.
Only tried with the metal cards, haven’t checked the Ultra/other cards.

Do know for sure I have seen it before but only with Mastercard so maybe they’ve (just) fixed it? Or it has to do with the level of the card? Today’s booking was an award ticket fwiw.

The Trip .com works fine for me every time (and free lounge access/e-sim I you book enough through them is also a nice benefit). All the other referrals with Revolut work as well, so I'll see Monday how the Skyscanner works. I also managed to double dip with booking .com: use the FB referral for attaching your FB account but pay with the referral from Revolot and use Revolut pay.

In general I'm very satisfied with Revolut and happy to have ditched my Amex which just feels like a Ponzi scheme where you have to persuade your friends to get an overpriced creditcard in order to get miles.

Yeah the booking.com double dip is quite nice indeed.
Saw they included Emirates 20:1 today and now also with the hotel chain partners.
Security fasttrack against payment being introduced recently as well.
Best of all, it's debit. Still got points when linked to Alipay.
They're certainly aiming for the travellers.
If only they'd include M&M as a transfer partner, that would be ideal.
