FCA (Kalispell MT) only open on weekends July 2026 due to runway construction

Due to runway construction, Kalispell airport will be closed for 4 weeks in July from Monday 6pm to Friday 10am. Delta will only fly on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. This is the high season in northern Montana. FCA is not a small destination. Delta has 5 flights a day plus additional direct ATL and LAX service in the summer. Alaska/United have full schedules as well. I do not remember any airport of this size shutting down for such long stretches.

MSO (Missoula) is 2 hours south and likely pick up Glacier Park traffic.

JAC shut for six weeks in May/June a few years ago. A significant seasonal station with flights from/to ATL, SLC, MSP and LAX. Delta did run some extra flights to IDA during that time.

ASE is closing for awhile next year to literally move the runway.

Local Business community is irate that they chose July instead of August for this. The airport itself has been undergoing a complete renovation, (and it is an amazing and massive improvement) but the July closure is likely going to be a huge hit to the local economy.

We have a vacation home up there and it hasn't affected our bookings for July, but I'm not sure people generally book their flights that far out. Still, I imagine Missoula will pick up the slack. There's a percentage of people who fly there instead of FCA anyway, as it is generally cheaper.

Hopefully once the airport renovation and expansion is complete, Delta can resume the ATL-FCA flights they had pre-Covid. One can dream, anyway!

Not necessarily during the summer - especially those with kids.

Curious why those with kids? Thats when I used to do all my travel. Now that Im an empty nester, Im far more likely to fly based on ticket price, etc.

Usually, you'd have to build trips around when kids are not in school or out on vacation. During the summer, parents may and can take trips based on their own (meetings) schedules.

One other point is now that many people are work from X location, they are doing just that and flying as you do, when tickets and rooms price out cheaper. Assumes availability of decent wifi/connectivity at end point arrival location(s). Or, perhaps, a small Starlink terminal+power source and a view to the sky.

To me July and August are equivalent. Both are summer months and when I was a kid, you had both months off from school. I usually prefer to go to Bozeman in July, because there is less chance of smoke, but I don’t know if that’s similar up in north.

Many schools in a lot of areas start back around August 1 these days. I think they started around here on July 27, a few years ago. Now, they are out by early May too depnding upon how many snow days they have to make up.
