This summer when I had a forced overnight in FRA I refused the options LH texted to me that I could stay in. So I booked my own room in the city at a Marriott (less than 130 euros) and LH didn't question paying me. But the forced overnight was a result of LH incompetence.

I do wonder what would have happened if OP who spend 500 euros in VIE wasn't HON. Would LH only pay the 150 euros?

I had similar situation in Zurich with LX last year, late arrival, no hotel offered in transfer desk, because "everything is full", which was generally true, as there was indeed no available in apps of all popular hotel chains and only some shady private places left on booking.com.
Ended up calling hotels one by one and got a (last) room for 350 CHF in Novotel + 2x40 CHF for uber, Swiss offered 250 CHF + 2x40 CHF for uber and long email exchange did not change anything.
Eventually got back the remaining 100 CHF from revolut travel insurrance but whole experience was pathetic.

Prices in Vienna are absolutely insane in December. I wanted to do a four day stay recently and even mid-tier hotels were 300 plus, despite looking at them week before travel. (I ended up just commuting from home instead.)

Airport hotels can be had under 200 on normal days but that goes out the window during any large scale disruption.

In that context 500 sounds quite reasonable and OP should pursue the claim.

25hours hotel, a really poor 4-star hotel in the city center. According to the Accor app I get it only because I'm a Diamond at Accor... If you think that I would not like to just stay at the airport instead of a 30-minute taxi ride at 1:30 am then you are... I would not say.....

Have you forgotten about duty of care always applies? And that peak periods exist for hotels? And when disruptions happen everything gets booked?

Ladies and Gentlemen,
the FT Rules are clear:
  • 12.2 Avoid Getting Personal

If you have a difference of opinion with another member, challenge the idea — NOT the person. Getting personal with another member is not allowed. Personal attacks, insults, baiting and flaming will not be tolerated.
    [...]
If another member gets personal with you, do not retaliate. Retaliation may well subject you to the same discipline. Instead, please use the 'Alert a moderator to this thread' button in the lower-left-hand-corner of each post, send a note explaining your concern to the moderator team, and leave it to them to handle. Please also see Rule 22 — When you believe someone has violated the rules.
Any personal attacks will be deleted.

Dears, let's not overreact here. I have not seen the posts that were removed but this forum has already lost so many valuable members that it becomes more and more boring and useless It's a pitty seeing chris63 leaving the forum. Hopefully he overreacted too and comes back after a cooling period 😉.

I missed some posts that were subsequently deleted, but if there is a rule against getting personal (which I can't disagree with in principle), surely there must also be a rule against repeatedly posting false or misleading information?

Exactly this, some posters on this thread put false information without taking the facts into account or actually knowing the regulations and jurisprudence. Repeatedly.
Bottom line : if 500 EUR was the going rate and OP has documentation (screen capture of search) any limit set by LH has as much legal value as the drawing of my 3 years old. Just remind your PA of that quoting the regulations and give LH a deadline of 7 days to pay, at day 7 on the dot file legal papers.

I misses the posts (busy week), but do hope that the issue doesn't have a lasting effect on the FT community. Hope that all who were considering to leave will come back soon.

Hi, I was trying first to take a hotel at the airport (Moxy or NH), but no chance, then looked at Hilton (nothing), IHG (Inter Conti available for more than 650EUR), Marriott (some two hotels, each more than 750EUR), and finally found this dodgy 25h at Accor for 498EUR... OS employees were telling us that LH will pay for any 3 or 4 star hotel, by the way. I'm really thinking where other passengers ended with their money...

By the way, they already paid for my hotel, and the whole treat I started not about this hotel price in fact, but more about the lack of any assistance from LH or/and OS during this diversion to VIE airport.

Not surprised they did, they know they have no standing. Those limits are just to scam customers not knowing their rights into accepting less than what is due to them.
