Prices in Vienna are absolutely insane in December. I wanted to do a four day stay recently and even mid-tier hotels were 300€ plus, despite looking at them week before travel. (I ended up just commuting from home instead.)

Airport hotels can be had under 200€ on normal days but that goes out the window during any large scale disruption.

In that context 500€ sounds quite reasonable and OP should pursue the claim.
