I've flown both quite a number of times, I would recommend sticking with NH. NH includes lounge access with PY if you're not Star Gold, also has slightly more recline and comfort. I echo others in that NH Y meals are pretty tasty, not as well presented as United Premium Plus but I personally don't mind. UA wins on IFE/App, NH wins on comfort/service.

Seat Selection - Row 25 vs 26
Hi there --
I am quite confused if Row 25 (bulkhead) or Row 26 is preferable for leg room and lounging on the JFK - HND route (737-300ER). Does it makes a difference if it's the new 212-seat iteration of the plane vs the old 212-seat? Upgradedpoints.com says the 25 row has less room owing to the bulkhead. If I'm 6' 2" will my legs feel tight when stretched out?

Similarly for the refurn flight, if you pay the $10 or whatever for the special meal in PE ex-tokyo, its pretty fantastic IMHO. Plus access to quite a bit of J drinks list during a big part of the flight is nice.

Having read elsewhere that the food in PE (USA-Japan) is the same as in Y and quite poor, I am wondering if the Hindu nonveg meal (HNML) would be worthwhile. Indian food usually works well on a plane. Any experience? On AA I once got a generic meal that followed Hindu/Muslim/Kosher/etc principles but was not Indian cooking; does ANA do the same?
(On the way back, I can order the extra-cost meal. Hopefully that will be edible.)

What's the rule for lounge access for PE (booked as UA flight number) at LAX and NRT? i think the NH site says when departing Japan only? Does it apply to both NH and UA flight numbers?

Yes there will be lounge access, the operating carrier counts. Not the marketing carrier

so not on intra-asia and domestic where it's only economy for the next connecting flight

ANA goes by class of departing flight, so unless you are in PY no dice for a connecting flight.
