The current Terminal Area Forecast (TAF) only goes through 8pm Wednesday evening at this point. At that time, the forecast is for easterly winds at 14 knots, five miles visibility with light rain, and a ceiling of 1,000' from broken clouds. That would suggest a single-runway operation the night before your flight.

Has anyone else noticed schedule changes for the end of May and early June for flights to/from EWR loaded in the last couple of days? Eg. UA seems to have trimmed one of the EWR/CLT flights on my travel date in early June, but haven't gotten any notification from UA and my res still shows the old flight which is no longer available for booking.
Any thoughts, or others seeing this too?

Is it possible the flight is just full/oversold? You might want to call UA.

We were scheduled on a flight that got trimmed and we got the changed itinerary notification at the top of our reservation.

The FAA announced further restrictions through June 15, but UA hasnt extended their waiver past 5/23. Anyone else think thats going to change? DL released their own waiver not too long after the announcement and I was able to rebook those flights in less than five minutes.

Thanks, just this morning I saw the schedule change banner in the app. My old flight was indeed cancelled and I was moved to one two hours earlier. This was for travel the first week of June. Interestingly, the new flight no longer appears for reservation on united.com, but Expertflyer seems to indicate it's just sold out.

UA2641 EWR-LAX this evening is canceled "because of an unexpected operational issue". Is this because of the combination of persistent EWR issues with weather?

Potentially however the cookie crumbs I'm seeing point more at aircraft availability, possibly the two combined together.

Per flightstats.com ship N773UA was to operate that flight.
Per flightaware.com N773UA last night departed from HNL as UA1169 originally bound for LAX but diverted to HNL, the two subsequent flights (LAX-EWR-LAX) have canceled and the next scheduled flight for that frame is UA3019 (expect that this is a ferry flight) in a bit over 17 hours from the time I'm typing this.

This suggests that there was a maintenance issue however the flight status on UA.com for 1169 sounds absurd: "Your flight is canceled because of issues with the airport's security checkpoints. We're sorry for the inconvenience." -- but per this thread on Reddit it appears there was an onboard security incident/passenger threat issue that prompted the return to gate.

Edited to add: Per ACARS appears to support that there was a bomb threat:

Even with a pretty wet day, interesting that only 5 flights canceled at EWR today (all airlines). Though my wife flew to LAX this morning, and it waited on the tarmac for over an hour after leaving the gate (single runway operation at that time) but arrived at LAX "only" 25 minutes late.

I have noticed UA has gotten even more generous padding travel times in recent months.

The padding is based on actual flight times of previous flights between city pairs. Its a sample size of I believe 1 year or the historical flight times for that given time of year. I just dont remember exactly. Regardless, the point is that all flight times published are completely data driven.

Crew pay, duty limitations, fuel planning, the augmentation of flights are all predicated on published block times. United doesnt just willingly add a few minutes just because.

Probably had a scheduled taxi-out time of 25 or 30 minutes. Leave on time, taxi for an hour, arrive 25 minutes late. It adds up.

I get similarly planned taxi times on flights leaving ORD during a departure push. Seems pretty reasonable.

I pulled the trigger yesterday on postponing a trip out of EWR today due to "Nor'Easter". Flight left on time...

Yea, for the EWR-LAX flights around noon, they've increased the block padding a bit this year; from a historical average block time of around 6h05 to 6h11 this year.
