LH Short-haul Flynet: European Aviation Network (EAN) in-flight connectivity rollout
What is the situation with FlyNet on shorthaul aircraft these days? I have not had one single shorthaul LH flight with FlyNet in well over 12 months. Has it been disabled or have I just been incredibly unlucky?
Its getting more and more frustrating.

The A32V and neo are waiting for the new regional antenna install that was supposed to happen in 2020. Now that the A320 fleet is short due to PW engine issues that plan is paused. The A319/20/21 ceos all have flynet.

This is good to know. I fly LHR-FRA more than any other route, obviously there are bigger factors at play but it still shocks me that on a corporate heavy route they never ever have FlyNet to LHR.

LH has finally given the go-ahead to install the EAN solution on its A32S fleet:

CARLSBAD, Calif., January 24, 2024 – Viasat, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT), a leader in global communications, today announced that Lufthansa Group has selected Viasat to equip more than 150 additional aircraft – across its Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian Airlines fleets – with the European Aviation Network (EAN) in-flight connectivity (IFC) solution. EAN combines S-band satellite coverage provided by Viasat with a complementary ground component network operated by long-standing Viasat and Lufthansa Group partner, Deutsche Telekom, delivering a service that supports streaming and other high bandwidth requirements.
This announcement continues a successful, enduring partnership between the companies. Inmarsat, which was recently acquired by Viasat, has provided its Ka-band IFC service to Lufthansa Group since 2015. This connectivity solution is already onboard 240 Lufthansa Group narrow-body aircraft.
The new selection showcases Lufthansa Group’s ongoing commitment to driving an exceptional passenger experience, offering a consistent connectivity experience across its fleets, ensuring that no matter which route or aircraft passengers take, they can benefit from reliable in-flight connectivity. The additional 150+ aircraft include Airbus A320s, A320neos and A220s fleet types.
EAN is a unique example of European technological and regulatory leadership, which allows air travelers in Europe to benefit from an outstanding pan-European IFC experience. Additionally, EAN takes advantage of small, low weight, low drag terminals, enabling Lufthansa Group to unlock cost-saving opportunities and enhance its sustainability credentials. These factors were important in Lufthansa Group’s selection of EAN terminals for their A320 and A220 fleets, to bring consistent in-flight connectivity as efficiently as possible.
Lufthansa Group airlines recently unveiled a new release of its onboard portal, FlyNet, which will be accessible on EAN-equipped aircraft. The portal gives passengers the opportunity to login to in-flight connectivity using their Travel ID or Miles and More logins, and to access information from menus for onboard food and beverage, to duty free offers and advertisements

LH Short-haul wifi rollout
Have a short haul LH flight soon and was wondering if there were any stats on the number of short haul planes that have WiFi. Had a quick Google but didn't find anything conclusive. It is an a320 if that makes any difference.

Isn't it all the Airbus neo that don't have Flynet? Indeed puzzling why exactly the new ones are not equipped (yet?).

The A32S with space flex and all neos don't have the antenna installed but will get the EAN/Viasat solution instead.

That's a pity - would have been a unique opportunity with Starlink for LH to once again be leading in something, instead of running after the consumers, deciding on the most complicated, consensus-driven solution (or is it consultant-driven?), then finding out that it's an order of magnitude worse than what everyone else is now doing, "...but we're stuck with the CAPEX" and "don't change horses in the middle of the race"..... or something like that.

EAN was agreed upon in 2019, the installation stalled in 2020 with the pandemic. EAN is also pretty innovative, it goes away from the traditional satellite based system to a hybrid system. https://www.europeanaviationnetwork.com/en/index.html
