Important to note, all of the above is for Oahu, not other islands. The restrictions are worked out between the mayor and the governor.

There's a lot more community spread on Oahu than stated in the quoted post. Agree or not, the mayor is attempting to do something without shutting down the entire island. No matter what he does, some people will criticize as not enough and others will say too much or too arbitrary.

Inter island is still shut down.
not exactly, if you fly to a neighbor island without a pre-arranged exemption, you will need to quarantine, each island has different rules and forms. There's no quarantine when flying inter-island to Oahu.

Sadly, this thread has become rather useless for people looking for actual information.

Maybe they can come in the new travel bubble!
https://mauinow.com/2020/08/20/hawai...-with-resorts/
(an idea with no chance of success, And it doesn't support local business that isn't located on hotel grounds.).

You know what state leads in rate of transmission? Its Hawaii! #1 ! Must have been all that singing in church. It isn't tourists spreading the disease, because they aren't here.

The way to deal with Covid is clear: Test (we woefully undertest hence our super high positive rate), and trace. Which we aren't doing much of either. Shutting down parks (O'ahu), 14 day travel quarantines, closing hiking trails, allowing unlimited church attendance but no wind instruments doesn't do anything. Test and trace, test and trace: it isn't rocket science. If what we are doing was working, we wouldn't have the highest rate of transmission in the country. We should change what we are doing.

There is a massive new hospital outbreak at Maui Memorial:
https://mauinow.com/2020/08/25/maui-...-of-infection/
Like my neighbor says: "They aren't having these outbreaks at the Mayo Clinic."

Its basically all the Covid on Maui. Mayor Pidgen's response? "I need day or two to tink about close da beaches."
https://mauinow.com/2020/08/24/mayor...-restrictions/

Maui is in a very difficult place right now. The state and local leadership are absolutely out of their depth. The travel quarantine is strangling the economy, and we have little or no response to the pandemic that makes any sense. I am not sure where we go from here, but this is a dark hour for Maui.

I was the last one of my parents and siblings to ever actually live here. I’m ultra conservative (not in politics but major changes in location for example). Everything was fine until Covid, financially this was beneficial to my immediate family and, I had a plan that my wife and kids were on board with, in fact they brought it up, not me. Covid changed everything, I’m waving the white flag and coming home to Colorado. It is funny that once we made this decision I have two new opportunities that popped up today and is potentially worth my while to stay beyond my planned Oct. 18 departure, but for the most part my client based has dried up. Incredibly sad and I pray for everyone here to hopefully survive the economic impact.

Safe journey and maybe you can do some stuff remotely - I recall the post when your family came over and quarantined for 2 weeks.

Thank you.
My wife planned to come back again and help me pack and ship, but that isn’t really practical now given the quarantine keeps extending. I’m so thankful of friends here on island that help, not just physically but mentally. It isn’t fun being alone like this. I love my wife and kids beyond words and can’t wait to see them again. I’m going to miss our daughter’s confirmation this Sunday at Church, without Covid I wouldn’t have blinked and flown home and been there for it, flown back to Maui next week. I’m sick beyond words I’m going miss that.

I know some keep track, I sold the Jeep more than I paid, and if I can, I’ll sell my 2019 Ram 1500 Limited 4x4 as well, saving me shipping it home. Used car values have skyrocketed and its worth more than what I paid. That said I question if anyone is in the mood to spend 50k on a used truck, even though it shows higher than that for Maui. I spot checked, but equivalent 2020 new that’s identical to mine is $72K at the dealership. I always look at comps like you would selling a house, they are around 51K, doesn’t mean anyone is in the mood though. I have a nice Land Rover collecting dust in my Colorado home, old 2006 but fully loaded and currently only gets driven if I remind my wife, not good as Land Rovers don’t deal well with sitting still. Purchased new by me and long since paid off. Don’t need two vehicles when I get home. Wife has a Subaru which we love.

Totally unrelated to Hawaii, but used car values are up big time nationwide. I have a few Car forums I follow and people are seeing 3k to 6K increase in value, enough so they can early terminate a lease, or buy/lease something else. Worth looking into if it helps.

I hear this over and over: solid, hard working people are leaving. Does not bode well for Maui.

I hate this, I was meant to live here. Makes me cry, yes in my late 40’s and some things make me cry. We seriously had a plan, I would fly back and forth for a few years, wife would retire from the state in 7 years, kids would go to college. We would buy a house or condo on the west side. So much for that. Maybe, just maybe, we will still do it as Colorado Springs housing market has skyrocketed and I expect Maui to be a buyers market soon.

It took my father passing away last year that made me realize life is short, I love it it here as does my wife, basically I’ve called it my second home since the late 80’s. Maybe this year isn’t the year, or maybe it is. I’ve never in life felt so welcomed and loved by friends and even strangers as I do here in Maui. It was meant to be and somehow we will retire here. Horrible time, but the Aloha spirit is alive.

I'm sure this was not an easy decision to make, but am happy to hear that your family will be reunited again. On a personal note, it's been over 20 years since I raised my sails and let the winds take me from Hawaii for a career on the Mainland. I've somehow ended up further away than I had ever imagined but remain anchored to home by the part of it I carry in my heart and feeding it now and then by visiting whenever I can. I hope the same can be true to you and perhaps one day, you can return to your life on Maui. There will be another side to this, likely neither as soon as we want it to be or looking like we'd want it, but I do believe there are better days ahead. Best wishes to you and yours.

p.s. Your truck sounds like a sweet ride; I would be all over it if I was back home (hopefully dragging a Force 25' behind it).

You should see the spare room filled with scuba gear. 7 sets while I have one and only. Huge house but I setup a wash bay for gear and a two stage drying system. Hard to leave but its the right thing to do.

As some know from prior posts my in laws have on the Big Island for nearly 50 years and raised a family here. They are in among others the building industry and property management business . Needless to say this last year was crippling for them. After a life time here they are leaving for the mainland. Mom and Dad are just going to retire off the islands but he younger part of the family who are actually running the businesses are leaving as well. As I mentioned in previous posts this is a "done deal" . Their homes have been sold and/or on the market now, equipment being liquidated, and new locations currently being looked at on the US mainland. I have actually pulled things a bit together here with my business and SOME of my partners are willing to do the quarantine to keep things going. I am actually trying to extend my current stay since I have completed quarantine and don't really wish to repeat it down the road on a repeat trip here (currently scheduled for late November). .

Im going to throw my dealership in front of the bus. Service dept was hardcore about mask use but the new car side was a joke. I was literally the only one wearing a mask, none of the sales team or managers were doing so. Like others I dont know the end game but Im taking what few precautions available. Jim Falk Dodge/Ram/Jeep dealership on Maui. Actually incredible people and I like them, but no mask use annoyed me.

Thinking about you today and sorry you couldn’t attend the confirmation - you’ll soon be back in CO. You gave it your all. There will be no wondering if you could have done more :-)

ps big shame about no masks in dealership. Very weird.
