FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: Ocn Vw 1K
In order to reduce noise in the Coronavirus / Covid-19 : general fact-based reporting thread, and to create a central place to invite any member to ask a basic question about the impact of COVID-19 on travel, your moderators have decided to open this separate "lounge" thread for related discussion that isn't strictly fact-based reporting.
Any member who can provide a constructive, helpful answer to a question; or post constructively in reply to a member's point-of-view, is welcome to post.

All FT rules apply, including avoiding personalized, snarky, political, other off-topic, commercial, and repeatedly disruptive content.

Discussion of general economic impacts of Covid-19 belongs in the OMNI forum, not here.
Discussion and critique of political/government actions to aid the economy or which is far more political than related to COVID-19 is for the OMNI/PR forum, not here.

This is a protocol for posting adopted by the forum Moderator team:Please follow this protocol, based on FlyerTalk Rules and long-standing FlyerTalk best practices. Doing so will help keep the thread open, and allow our moderator team to aid members, rather than having to resort to discipline.

•Constructive, respectful posts, views, opinions, questions, and replies, related to the topic are welcome. Avoid commenting on members personally, or posting off-topic or political messages.

•While respectful disagreement of a posted view is allowed, don’t call-out posters to prove their points. FlyerTalk has never required discussion standards at the level of a Ph.D. dissertation defense, or a trial court witness cross-examination.

•After a reasonable exchange of views on a point, please yield the floor so that others may bring up different topics, questions or points.

•Especially important in this time of pandemic, when normal life and travel have been upended: please take regular breaks from the thread.
Please stay healthy,

your FT Coronavirus and Travel Moderator Team.

It’s about delaying the spread so the government has time to build up medical resources and/or find a cure.

if you watch the video that was linked upthread, if there is an effective vaccine it will be at best 2 months, most likely more. The randomized trials of antiviral treatment are underway. It will be a few weeks/months before they have enough numbers to make a call on treatment. So there will be no cure. The virus mutates.

There will be no vaccine available to you in two months (*). Read this helpful post by for @trueblu’s post on that topic

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/32122046-post2934.html

(in short, testing and production of large quantities takes a lot of time)

(*) I suppose you could volunteer for a vaccine trial.

Perhaps share what school conferred relevant medical degrees to you, what epidemics or pandemics you have fought, investigated or modeled at a reputable organization, or what else qualifies you to call others stupid. I am looking for something, anything that would help me find anything of value in your posts when I try to learn about the situation we are facing and discussing.

Additional translation. Get to the back of the plane. Impact will be felt less.

It seems that travel has had a huge impact on transmission. Since there aren't enough resources to 'filter' this between people in close proximity in the US, would a country-wide home quarantine help to halt the spread? Because that's what we're heading towards anyways--the difference is that a percentage of people will be critically sick.

It likely would but the economical impact would be immense. You have to try and strike a fine balance between underreacting and overreacting. You basically have no chance of completely containing it, so now you're just trying to keep the rate of new infections below a rate that would overwhelm hospitals with critical cases.

It would, but the rate we're going I can see that by December people will be filing for bankruptcy if there is no vaccine or slowdown in the sick/death rate in the next 2 months that will allow work schedules to get back to normal. Isn't avoiding that future worth a temporary dip if a home quarantine will do it?

People should look at what is happening in Italy and Spain. They did not flatten the curve enough and now due to the saturation of the health care system, mortality and impact increases for young people: in Spain 30 % of cases now need intubation, regardless of age. In Italy there are more deaths for the age 40-50 years old. This is what will happen if we do not take drastic measures now.

There was a joke on Facebook, but I'm seriously considering doing it. Someone had the idea of making a T-shirt with big letters saying, "it's allergies and asthma, not a virus!".

Worst idea so far. How can we work from home without the internet? Free high speed internet for all would be a better idea?
