what month do status changes (downgrade) occur?

Marriott hasn't updated accounts and does so only with periodic sweeps (next one maybe coming much later in the year). But the app and website account pages both show status ending 1/31/2020. Not sure where you're looking...but the counter for those going from Titanium to Ambassador clearly shows it.

That clearly suggests that status resets on February 1.

No. You get the 50 night gift when you cross 50 nights. People with LT Tit status only get the gift if they reach 50 nights. Think of the soft landing to Plat status as your gift.
