In fact, I had to be reminded through some of these news articles that peanuts were part of WN's origin story. I had completely forgotten it.

Nader is nuts, of course (pun intended).

He does have a point though:
Nader suggests the loss of peanuts is the beginning of the end for an airline he loves, and that many Americans love. Lose the nuts, and luggage fees, passenger segmentation, and further service degradation could follow.

I'd counter that Southwest has been headed down that road for some time now, and, if anything, discontinuing peanuts is a symptom -- not a warning.

The airline he's referring to ended with the demise of RR1.0. The plucky upstart that competed on price and drove the legacy carriers crazy by adding capacity at a rapid pace and encroaching on monopoly routes all over the U.S.

Now it's just a 4th legacy. (Granted, with a different model that is better in many ways, worse in others.)

Where was Nader when WN unilaterally invalidated a bunch of drink coupons?

The Spousal Unit said they were giving out multiple peanut packs to people on his flights yesterday. I guess they were trying to liquidate their stock of them before the new rule came into play

The peanuts stocks are still around in places. Had a couple OAK-LA area flights last week, and had peanuts on an ONT-OAK leg. Also saw a passenger carrying a handful of Southwest packet of peanut bags around the OAK airport, and accidentally dropped an open one - it looked like there were 20+ peanuts that came out of that tiny bag!
(fwiw, I did a count on a second pretzel bag and found 14. Potentially a lot of variance, though a small sample size)

It ain't 8/1 yet!

I bet that is some lawyer imposed date and not reflective of actual peanut stock on hand. Bet they end up on eBay by some enterprising WN or airport employee after fished from the dumpster.

And that was what I concluded from our peanut counting exercise circa 2011 IIRC, weight or number, huge variances!

I'd bet someone guessed how long the current supply would last and the set the date by that.

Occasionally when I am at the airport I will see a big box of snacks on the counter at the gate. Free for the taking. I've asked about this and was told that the FAs gave them to the GA and they were giving them away.

Having been in meetings where corporate decisions were made I'm always amazed about how little effort goes into it.

I've been told that, effective August 1, they will no longer serve peanuts on board (just as the announcement said).

Well, I fly MCI-MSP tomorrow afternoon, we will see if I get any peanuts or if they are literally giving away as many as possible!

Well it's not even August 1st yet and both individual packs & large bags of peanuts are popping up on eBay, what's funny is that the larger one is cheaper than the seller selling the individual bag...

I flew MDW-DCA yesterday morning and got 2 bags of peanuts. I ate one and saved one. Flying DCA-CMH tomorrow. Will see if they still offer them.

Southwest should mail their entire remaining stock of peanuts to Ralph Nader.

The National Peanut Board is (understandably) not happy.
