Consolidated "Renting at EWR; What Kind of Cars to Expect?" Thread

Just got Ultimate Choice at EWR this morning (it was being built out last week, but wasn't available).

I'm PC, but had booked a B Car so I had to pick from the Midsize zone instead of the PC zone.

Midsize options were solid, nothing amazing, but nice to be able to choose. PC lot was stocked with tons of nice stuff including big 7 passenger SUVs. Looking forward to trying it out with an intermediate booking in SFO this weekend so I can get to pick from the PC lot.

I'm seriously considering never using Hertz again. Because Marriott, I get "ultimate we don't actually reserve your choice".

AUS, DFW, RDU and now EWR have not in 12 or so rentals since October had all of the car class, the rate, or Siruis as I reserved, so invariably force rate upgrades on me, and occasionally swindle in even their totally useless navigation system.

Except forcing pricey upgrades on me, I'm not sure how this is good at all. Oh wait, even that isn't good.

Completely different experience for me. I've been using Hertz more and more recently (last year or so), and I am really liking this Ultimate Choice. Coupled with the United bonus miles, they are my favourite choice these days.

I agree about the Hertz Nav system though, and mentioned this up-thread: if you pick a PC car with the Hertz Nav system, they WILL charge you for it extra. Seems especially odd in a QX80 which had its own perfectly usable Nav system already integrated.
BTW, a call to Hertz (during rental, not after return), and they removed the Nav charge.

Swindled again. Quoted a rate of $345.75 at EWR, forced into "ultimate guess" corral. Forced to hunt for the smallest vehicle (an Altama); estimated rate at the gate, $402.

Why is it so difficult to get the car I asked for? To give me a parking spot to go to?

Apart from the price difference (which is a totally different issue), most people seem to like the chance to choose their car, which is why Hertz is rolling out Ultimate Choice; customers liked the National experience better. Why do you not want the option?

EWR - Sunday night around 7 pm (one-way to Jersey City). Reserved C so I could use the Ultimate Choice area.

PC area was full of various sedans; I didn't look to hard but it looked like mostly Japanese full-sized cars. I was looking for a SUV for luggage capacity and had my pick between Nissan Pathfinders, Toyoya 4Runners, and Hyundau Santa Fe Sports. I took an F4 2017 Santa Fe Sport (base trim) with 3,200 miles and working XM.

Rented today from Newark Airport, Presidents Circle area. Nada. Not one car in over 25 spots. Five Star had a few SUVs... had to drop down to Gold area to find a car. Ridiculous to offer "Ultimate Choice" when ALL the reserved spots have cars and no cars in the PC area. Just ridiculous. 5 of us running around all trying to get a car. Pandemonium. I'd rather have a reserved car in a reserved spot.

Weak selection in the Presidents Circle area at EWR this morning. A sea of Camrys and various Nissans. Hardly any options even for pod upgrades.

Summer weekends in the NYC metro area are always tough.

EWR in recent weekends has been a little better than 50/50 at having some Infiniti, Audi, or better in the Pres Club selection, but usually only one or two at a time.

Was just at EWR. Nothing to write home about in Presidents Club. Mostly fully size cars (Camry, Fusion). Beyond full size was Avalon and couple of Pathfinders. National next door had Explorer, 4runner, F150, Maxima, Arcadia, Camaro in addition to what Hertz had.
