I'll probably do that at the start of my next TP run as I'm a glutton for punishment.

Welcome on board.
Having read the c-w-s trip report i am now satisfied that c-w-s and Tyler Brule are not one and the same. Those socks and the threads of the trousers would not pass sartorial muster with our Tyler ; and that sports bag is not Net-A-Porter! On that evidence i am also prepared to acknowledge that c-w-s is indeed a man from the north-east of England. Beyond that nothing is certain.

I will be looking out for those socks in the NCL lounge although for obvious reasons i prefer black and white stripes on my socks.

I've read this thread with a mixture of pleasure and horror. The horror part - my first LH in Y for several years is next Saturday. The 10 hours to MAA in a 787 is now solidly confirmed as something I'm going to have to brace myself for. Hopefully a few stiff G&T's will do the trick. (and thankfully back in CW and I'll truly appreciate it)

Oh my... "lots of people fly economy" - the majority of people travel economy! Although the numbers vary greatly depending on how you cut it, per plane this is anywhere from about 58% (789) to 100% (321) (for WT/ET only) - and I suspect overall it's probably close to 80%. I would also note that the survival rate is probably as good as those travelling up front (but would be interested to know if any studies have been done!).

CWS! Great report on the 787-situation ^

I had my doubts that you actually would go through with this, I mean a man with probably a seven digit Avios account has some options

I feel that this is a race to the bottom, the less people are willing to pay, the worse the experience will be. This is certainly not limited to BA even though WT on 787 must be the leader of the pack right now when it comes to discomfort.

There have been studies of the safest seats on planes for various types of crashes.

Beyond this, the demographics and health status of coach versus premium cabin passengers are surely distributed differently. For example, think of the obese passengers who purchase something above coach due to their size. They're presumably more likely to die from various causes but the rates of death during flight might be so low as to be statistically insignificant.

And how many of those are doing 21 flights per week?

This has been one of my favorite threads to follow. Sad that it's over. But a friend of mine who is a sheep farmer in Buckinghamshire just sent me the most fabulous book on sheep farming in the north of England. Very eye opening and a highly recommended read if you find yourself sitting in coach again for 6 hours.

As a seasoned Y man, I bet nobody else in there would have considered they might get some compensation, albeit Avios, for an uncomfy seat and bad IFE. I'm sure some of that was to do with cws's hard-won status, but it is salutary and I hope this thinking gets out there. I don't like compensation culture generally but more Ys asking may at least get BA to notice things that need improving - IFE being my bugbear. Let the masses rise up!

... no, not 21 flights per week (presumably more correctly- 'in a week'), but have done 20 flights, 45,647 miles in 3 weeks, all in Y....

How do you get any work done while flying? I find business class to be a very productive time to work, to the point where I usually regret not trying to sleep more on my flights. One of my most productive 24 hour blocks of work ever was SYD-SIN-LHR (my first time on the SQ A380), but I am usually very productive in CW or F on BA, and even in row 1 of CE when it's not just a short hop to DUB or AMS.

By contrast, I find it difficult to even open my laptop in shorthaul Y other than an exit row or bulkhead, and if someone is in the middle seat, it's pretty difficult to work comfortably for more than short while.

Elbow clash is a definite problem in Y. Bad enough trying to eat half the time let alone use a laptop etc.

Great thread. If someone who travels at the front of the plane as much as CWS can survive BA economy and say "not so bad really" then it really does make some of the comments we see on CW seem hyperbolic. That seat does look tiny though.

CWS: You clearly spend an incredible amount of time flying - amazing that in 40 years you had managed to avoid Economy. That being the case, was any part of you looking forward to this flight just out of curiosity? I love my trips in CW and F, but I only manage about 10 flights a year. If I was doing 10 a week, I'm sure I'd find it mundane to the point where I'd actually welcome a change, even if it meant a worse seat!
