Embassy Suites

But regional chain, Drury Inn, found mainly from Texas to Missouri and from New Mexico to Georgia, with some exceptions deserves an honorable mention. Drury Inns are not too expensive. Compared to the Hyatt, they are cheap.

Embassy Suites still the best? Or has it changed over the years?

Hilton Garden Inn for consistency, Embassy Suites overall (though less consistent, IMO).

Hampton Inn and Suites can range from reasonably decent to revolting; the plastic hockey puck egg facsimiles are true UFOs - unidentified frying objects.

I've got to say I'm kind of disgusted by the ES breakfast, finding it
greasy and nasty and prefab. It's individual properties whose breakfasts
I appreciate - Sheraton Anchorage, a particular Red Roof I think in
Peoria, ... . Anyone preferring ES to the Ritz even in some podunk
city seriously has to get tastebuds rebooted.

My issue with ES breakfasts (which runs contrary to what I posted 5 years ago) is that the breakfast area is typically overloaded with families so you have to wait in a long line for any hot food. And, as the poster above me indicated, it's not very high quality either.

Depends not just on the chain but the hotel within the chain. JWM in BKK has a full serve free breakfast in the lounge. Including US breakfast, British breakfast, Continental breakfast, Thai breakfast, and a few other options.

agent may be able to get hotel to match lowest rate you find, with benefits
(if expensive luxury hotels will match, surely less expensive hotels will too)

Given that you can get HHonors Gold for very little with the right credit cards, I'm going to throw Conrads into the list.
