Overall the experience with Chase is rather disappointing.

First, the Italian pay phone system operators said the Chase number (collect call) BLOCKED collect calls. Since the AU card was not lost, I used the AU card to pay for the call, about $47 charge later I saw online.

Then when we got to the hotel, we tried to call from the hotel. Again, the collect call number was blocked to take collect call! Hilton FCO ended up using the front desk's line to call for me.

When I initially called to report the stolen card, Chase was NOT able to stop the card because the system was in a weekend update mode. The rep who took the call said she would email the security dept which in turn would put a stop on the card when the system was up and running.

It never happened. When I called back on Monday to inquire the situation I was told the card was NEVER blocked. Though the rep did find an email from the previous rep. But nothing has ever been done. And, get this, this rep said since the AU card was not lost, he suggested Not to block the card but had the merchant called for approval on each transaction.

I insisted the card needed to be canceled promptly and a replacement card be sent to the hotel address which we would return after 10 days (on a cruise). The rep refused. No big deal. We have other cards and I really dont want to keep calling Chase on this crap. I asked him to put a note to send the card to our home address at proper time so the card would be waiting when we returned home.

It never happened. When we returned home, there was no card in mail pile. Wait a week, still no card. SMed Chase, was told replacement card was NEVER ordered...

Long story short, compared to AMEX, Chase is worthless in situation like this.

CSP does not worth its $95 fee in our opinion, especially now Chase has pulled out from Verified by Visa program. So now each time if you try to buy a train ticket online from virtually each major European national train system, SNCF, Trenitalia, Renfe, and may be DB, you would need to call and they would give the card a 24 hours "pass" or whatever it is, so your transaction would go thru. Otherwise, you would have to go thru 3rd party sites to buy and pay extra (the 3rd parties commission).
Sounds like quite an experience...... ..I don't know but I never really had such issues with them

PS ..., Chase pulled out of verified by visa??? Since when??????? I tried to get renfee tickets through the citi executive concierge, because I was having a hard time understanding Spanish and their website is quite bad
In the end after many attempt on both cards, the AA card ended up working while Chase did not, this may partially explain why? What, I can't believe it??

Wow, that experience in its entirety is truly astonishing and unacceptable. Personally, I do think this would be a dealbreaker as far as continuing my relationship with that card product.

Unfortunately, I was pickpocketed in Barcelona a few weeks ago. I had only a Citi and WF card in my wallet, and both banks were very efficient (less than 5 min phone call each) in cancelling the cards (immediately) and sending out replacements (to my home, as I was headed back the next day anyway). As in the past, using Skype over my hotel room's wi-fi connection was a lifesaver-- there isn't even a charge to call US toll free numbers over Skype.

Citi overnighted the card... but I was a little surprised that WF said they could, but only if I paid , which I declined to

I use T-Mobile WiFi calling which comes pre installed on pretty much any smartphone (including iPhone with ios 8) This in combination with the new international roaming benefits that come with the T-Mobile plan, is in my opinion the ultimate solution for staying connected overseas

I lost my Chase card along with my ID's on a beach somewhere in Brazil. So, I called immediately using roaming to cancel it. After I got back to my hotel, I phoned in to have my replacement cards sent out.

Spelling out the address in Brazil was a pain so I opted to use secure messaging instead. About 4 days later, the new cards arrived via UPS/

Emergency Card Replacement in Europe

Anyone know what the normal turnaround time is for an emergency CSP card replacement when traveling in Europe?

I was quoted a week... when mine was stolen in Spring of 2013 in Rome Termini. I asked if I could have it sent to the hotel on our next stop and was told No.

Since we had other cards with us, all with 0% forex fee, all have decent earning, I told Chase to send the replacement card to my home address a week before we flew home. I had to follow up with an SM when I did not see the card waiting for me when we returned home. They did not send it as promised.

I must say, the whole experience from reporting the incident to subsequent handling, is far less than desired. When I reported the incident it was a weekend and the rep could NOT stop the card because the system was updating.... She said she would send an email to the proper dept to handle it once the system update was finished. She did send it but the "proper dept" failed to act upon when I called back on Monday morning to find out the status.

When my husband lost his this past May. again in Italy but a small town near Venice, we did not bother to call Chase at all. We just went online to send Chase an SM to stop the card.

One thing I do learn is, the petty thieves in Europe do NOT try to use your cards whether they are CC or debit cards. They only aim for the cash in the wallets. None of our lost cards has ever incurred fraudulent charges, despite in each incident, the reports were 7 to 8 hours late after cards were gone. This is a much different experience than it is in US or Canada. People on TripAdvisor said that if you know exactly where your cards were stolen, search the trash cans nearby you might be able to find your wallet with only the cash gone missing...

Thanks. I am traveling soon and was curious what the procedure would be if something were to happen. Doesn't sound promising. Will hope that we hold on to our cards!

I also forgot to mention, the collect call numbers listed at the back of the cards are USELESS if you try to call it from a Pay Phone. All operators told me the number was BLOCKED to take collect call....

It was Hilton FCO front desk staff to put thru the call to Chase for me when we could not make the collect call number work. They called directly from the front desk line and handed me the phone once it was connected.

Hence this year when the same thing happened to husband, we just use SM to inform Chase (and BofA as well). We reported this in Milan after we arrived the hotel when my husband discovered his wallet was gone when we were halfway on the train. Though we suspected his wallet was long gone before we even board the train. (He was bumped at from his side by 2 big fat African ladies when leaving a McD where we were killing time before our train trip.) We estimated the time lapse was at least 7+ hours. Nothing was charged on his lost cards during that period. The only pending charge was from Sheraton Padova where he used his CSP to pay for the taxes. In our SM to Chase we verified the Sheraton charge was valid and the LAST charge made by us. If anything happened afterward, they would all be fraudulent charges. Chase SM came back to confirm the card was stopped and the charges up to Sheraton's would be transferred to the new card which was already issued and showed up online. Card waited for us upon return.

So, SM is much more effective and stress-free.

There might be some inconvenience involved when losing one's cards, but very minimal, if any, disruption to your trip if you also carry other cards - key is not to put all cards together so you have the back up tugged away.
