I like the new design too. How is the service compared to the MO ? I've been thinking about trying the PEN for a long time but i remember reading on this board that the lobby was infested with tourists / non guests . Would you advise it Mike or shall I expect the same as the Plaza lobby in NY (then thanks no thanks i love peace and quiet) ?

I think you should definitely try the Peninsula. I don't think nonresident tourists in the lobby really detract from the experience as other parts of the hotel will not be crowded. If you choose to have tea in the lobby they will take very good care of you as a staying guest. I very rarely have afternoon tea at hotels and tend to avoid lobbies anyway.

Upper House airport transfer

Has anyone every done the airport transfer arranged by Upper House? They have a 'Summer Retreat' rate that includes one-way airport transfer or 'Summer Retreat Deluxe' that includes roundtrip transfer and 500HKD food and beverage credit. Just wondering what kind of car to expect for a solo traveler.

I prefer the Pen over the FS, MO, LMO, RC, and the list goes on. The view of the Harbor from the rooms, the service, and the historic nature of the hotel have made me always regret not staying at the Pen when I try those other places. If you do decide to go with the FS, the Club is one of its best features.

I just booked air transfers at FSHK for an upcoming trip, and the hotel said all of them are in Mercedes S class, at rate of HKD1100. Looks like Bentleys are available for double the price.

We are taking the train/subway. Quicker. Cheaper. Cooler. Bentleys in particular are just so . . . tacky.

Bentley is an unusual choice - presumably the Mulsanne or Flying Spur and not the footballers favourite GT. I've heard several times that the Bentley, not surprisingly, is a firmish ride

I don't know about tacky, but if you arrive by car on a busy weekday, you will spend a looooong time in traffic. I too just take the airport train unless it's the weekend.

I've decided to book the Chuan Infinity Suite at Langham Place for my trip later this year. Seemed to be the best bang for the buck. I'll post a report when I get back.

I stayed in a Chuan suite at LP a few months ago. It is fantastic, but definitely not for everyone. Maybe the most expensive suites in HKG per square foot as they are filled with Feng Shui touches. Each suite is substantially different, and the largest is 5x the size of the smallest. Really hard to compare to normal luxury hotel suites (in the same hotel you can get a "normal" suite that is larger for a lower price, and I suspect most westerners would prefer that). The Chuan residences do come with superior service level (as good as Pen in their suites and better than FS) if you need that (e.g. room service orders are instant, as they take priority over the rest of the hotel as well as having dedicated staff).

Sounds great. We will be coming from an overwater pool villa in the Maldives to HK, then off to the mansions @ Sofitel in Macau. If it is a bit smaller, that is ok. The appeal of this was the in suite infinity bath and the steam room. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint!

Those are minor elements of the room but it is a very nice bath and the private steam room is great ... the only other hotel I stay at that has this is in Milan (much more lavish in Italy as it is Turkish style). Sounds like a good match to your priorities. Have a meal at Mings Court (Michelin 2 star and quite good, maybe the most under-rated restaurant in HKG).
