I am sure I remember from one of Seat 2As travel logs, that he said "The best thing about leaving Alaska, is having a return ticket"

A truly great state

they tried that one in Anchorage for 6 hours and 6 or 8 people showed up for the woodstock reunion festivities

That's only ~20 degrees "warmer" than it is at 35,000 feet...
I spent five years in Interior Alaska and loved it, and would move back if I could. Great place to live. The summers are the best you'll ever find in Alaska, and the winters are beautiful, with none of the freeze-thaw-freeze yoyo's that other winter cities (ahem, Anchorage) get. 40 below admittedly gets old after a few days, but fortunately it is the exception and not the rule.

-nobody demands us to tell us when to shovel snow off government owned sidewalks in front of the house....we wear boots and walk through it!

-we dont pay sales tax or income tax to the state so they can piss it away

-rush hour involves a 20 minute ride home instead of 2 hours

-US Presidents rarely visit which is wonderful because Ive been in cities where their motorcade was driving and basically the world stops revolving for them

-when it rains, snows, sleet, or hail we dont drive 25 in a 55....we drive 60

Any other questions?
I like you. ^

I still live in the Interior and have for the past 23 years. I echo your well penned sentiments 100%! I'd like to add to them this poem by my favorite Chinese poet, Li Bai, which describes my feeling for life up here north of the Alaska Range most exquisitely:

QUESTION AND ANSWER

You ask me:

Why do I live
On this green mountain?

I smile
No answer

My heart serene

On flowing water
Peachblow
Quietly going
Far away

This is another earth
Another sky

No likeness
To that human world below

Boy, I hit a nerve apparently. I love all the reasons why nobody would live in Portland. They are exactly why I'm glad I don't live there myself (just work there).

At least I don't need to plug my car in to a heater so it'll start......

Let's talk about TUS in the SUMMER...that can be REAL fun!!!

Thankfully, for both TUS and FAI, we have modern heating and cooling systems, which make both more tolerable.

ANC and FAI? Phfft. Too cold, too big and there's no ocean at Fairbanks.

Give me SE anyday. Mild winters, our rare sunny days beat any summer's day in the interior, no bugs, short flight to SEA with all the benefits of AK.

Just don't be afraid of a little rain.

Agree with everything but the "no bugs" comment. Depends on where you are in SE.

I love all the references to -40 F as if it is somehow different than -40 C.

Seriously folks it is the same temperature F or C.

F= (C x 9/5)+ 32 so -40 = (-40 x 9/5)+32 therefore - 40 = -72 + 32
so -40 C = -40 F QED proven

HA! Guess thats true. I drove my truck, a 2002 dodge ram down to the states once and somebody saw my cord on the front, stared at it a while, then said with a strange look on their face....Dodge used to make an electric powered truck ?
