Has anyone else ever paid less for a Main Cabin Select seat?

Oddly, I was trying to book some last minute New Years travel, and a Main Cabin Select seat from SFO to SEA was $79, whereas a non-refundable Main Cabin seat was $159 on the same flight. Pretty weird, but I'll take it.

Which flights are considered short/medium/long?

I ask because SEA-DFW can be bought as a thru-flight... meaning that you might be able to fly F on BOTH legs (SEA-LAX-DFW) for $110.
