I booked my parents in a Junior Suite at the Russie and the were not impressed at all. The room was small, and the bathroom really tiny. I had lunch there in the courtyard a few times, which I can recommend - a beatiful, calm oasis in this bustling city.

When I Rome (which I am rarely) I usually stay at the Boscolo Exedra, which is very nice, but not in a good location for tourists. On a leisure stay, I would chose the Portrait Suites.

But Ferragamo's Portrait Suites is basically a B&B - not a proper hotel. I was not impressed.

Last time I was in Rome (early 2009), I stayed at the Villa Spalletti Trivelli, which fairly recently opened as a small luxury hotel. Terrific location atop the Quirinale, with very nice rooms, bathrooms, and rooms on the ground floor for the use of hotel guests (the library, drawing room, etc.) Until Rome gets a Four Seasons or other, larger, truly wonderful 5-star hotel, I think this is a somewhat nice option. Service is a bit on the light side--it seemed somewhat short staffed to me. But the villa is in spectacular condition, and the guest rooms are pristine, comfortable, and beautiful. See what you think: http://www.villaspalletti.it/

Agree, but on a leisure stay I would eat & drink outside the hotel anyway. Plenty of options in that area. And as you said yourself, there is no really good hotel in rome right now... unfortunately. So Portrait Suites it a compromise I am willing to take (until a FS opens )

Don't think I would describe the very luxurious Portrait Suites as a 'B&B' with all the connotations that word has. It is in the sense that it doesn't have a restaurant (but you're in the middle of Rome - how many restaurants do you need?), or a pool (but tell me which hotel in Central Rome has a good pool), but in exchange it offers a private, comfortable and - as we experienced it - VIP-like experience. To each his own, but for half the price of de Russie, I would take this any time (until, as vienna-resident said, a FS opens).
