All major German cities have at least one good hotel. Berlin and Munich are probably the 2 best places for vacation (in terms of interesting touring sites) and happen to have the cream of the city luxury hotels. Otherwise there are some stunning castle hotels, mostly in the Rhine valley. A different kind of luxury at times. Or go to Vienna (much better hotels and restaurants for the price). Imperial hotel in Wien is one of the 10 best hotels in the world by most measures (while Germany has none).

Don't bother with Schloss Bensberg, which I found very overrated.
I actually had a very pleasant stay here four years ago: http://www.weingut-koegler.de/hotel.php?pSpr=en - it is not luxury per se but a very nice converted winery in a very pretty town which is well situated for exploring the German winelands.
Park Hyatt Hamburg is great. I've also had good stays at the R-C in Berlin and the Intercon in Cologne. The IC in Dusseldorf is up to the job although I'd be tempted to give the Capella a go.
Sylt is the super-luxury German seaside area - not got there yet but A-Rosa is opening a property in 2010 which should be good if their excellent family seaside property in Travemuende (search for my review) is anything to go by. The Grand Hotel in Heiligendamm is probably the most luxurious of the coastal hotels although this one is out of the way - this is where the G8 summit was held. It was a Kempinski until recently, not sure if it is better or worse under independent management.

I know Vienna isn't in Germany, but I have to second this observation. The Imperial Hotel in Vienna is an experience that everyone should have once in their lifetime.

i had a good stay in a suite @ brandenburger hof berlin. fantastic breakfast.
there is no luxury near freiburg DE or grundlsee AT is there? also thoroughly enjoyed those destinations.
dom hotel in CGN isnt luxury, but dom side "corner suites" and "dom suite" have amazing views of dom. hotel is bottom left - http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...02081&t=h&z=19
switzerland also has plenty of luxury hotels/chalets.

Adlon in Berlin isn't too bad. Great location next to the Brandenburg Gate.
Schloss Elmau in the South is also very good: http://www.schloss-elmau.de/
The Althoff Hotels are also quite nice: http://www.althoffhotels.com/
My favourite being the Seehotel berfahrt on Tegernsee.

My big complaint about the Adlon is the massive number of tourists milling about in the Lobby- it can be a huge number of people in the summer! Rooms are nice however, and the view is stunning.

So agree with you, Travelsig. Adlon is much too 'corporate' for me. If you are not a diplomat or EU MEP, then forget service, too. Suites are OK, but nothing too special. I still miss the Four Seasons Berlin.....sigh

Colombi Hotel is considered to be the most luxurious option in and around Freiburg (LHW member). Its restaurant holds one michelin star:
