That's one of those 'have you stopped beating your wife' questions so I'll pass ... other than to say there's no question of an 'alert'. Either the purchase qualifies or it doesn't, and mrploddy has provided the answer.

Paypal is Paypal to Amex. It makes no difference whether you transferred money to yourself, bought something on ebay or topped up a pre-pay card. You have always been able to Paypal cash to yourself to generate Amex spend, but the fees usually didn't make it worthwhile.

I might get one for our nanny, actually. I give her Ł40+ a week for food, nappys etc all of which could be Visa'd - it would be worth a few thousand miles a year and I wouldn't need to visit the cashpoint so often! Probably link it to my BMI card rather than the Amex, though.

But the thing is I asked the question of whether paypaling yourself was a good idea and the answer was that paypal would see regular paypals to yourself as money laundering / misuse.

The difference with the topup card it that you are loading a top up card. If you choose to withdraw it as cash then that's your choice and paypal has put a limit on the card at Ł10k to stop serious money laundering. Two topup cards and you're laughing all the way to a companion voucher (I don't have a PP card)

Its annoying that BA process purchases instantly, but they delay the processing of refunds. Presumably to make profit on the interest over the delay period.

The "Available Credit" on the Amex website is a real-time figure, hence if you buy a ticket using your Amex, the available credit indicator reduces immediately. However when you cancel a refundable ticket, its a few days before BA actually do the transaction and your available credit increases.

There's a curiosity about the PayPal Top Up Visa card, the one offering AmEx top up payments earning BA Miles.

I had noticed that the card did not have raised account details, like a Visa Electron card. Lo and behold, a purchase today showed this on the receipt: 'Visa debit ELECTRON'.

If it is indeed in effect a Visa Electron card (though without the Electron branding on the card), it could be useful for purchases on FR, EI and EZ with no payment surcharge. It is simpler to obtain than a regular Visa Electron card.

Caveat: I haven't tried it yet with FR, EI or EZ.

After reading here a lot of people got letters from AMEX reducing the credit limit on their cards, I was surprised to receive a letter today stating that my credit limit was actually increased! Only around 10%, not much but an increase nonetheless.
I only once spent very close to my limit, and for the last two month my balance was about half my limit (I always pay in full).
Did everyone else got an increase?

Yep - I got an unrequested increase (about 10%) about 2 months ago.

Amex and paypal card

Hi,

Just been looking at the Paypal site.

How do you top up your paypal account from AMEX?
I can only find putting cash onto the Paypal card from a bank account. Am I missing something?

Thanks for any help.

If you're buying a PayPal top up card, you can do so by paying by PayPal and using your AmEx card to fund the transaction An oddity is that you will be charged in $ and receive a refund of the $/Ł exchange rate difference. This has worked in my favour, but can presumably go the other way depending on exchange rate volatility.

Companion Ticket too early

Help!! I have fallen victim of the Amex statement saying you need to spend X to get a companion ticket and then finding out that some of the transactions on the statement are used to "help" you get to the figure of X.

Bottom line - I have triggered my Companion ticket 10 days too early (i.e. needed the 2 year expiry option ) I still have 6 months before the end of my membership year so can't start earning my next companion ticket until December. This has blown our 2010 holiday plans.

Any suggestions? Anyone ever got AMEX or BA to extend the companion ticket?
