Scandinavia-Germany : SK/LH monopoly ???

hello

I have been following that board for a while, and now it's time to try to become an "active" member. I would like first to thank everybody here for their great advice, tips,.. those last 2 years when i was travelling heavily.Very useful, interesting and entertaining!
My first topic will be here in the SK board, as i noticed we had nordic members , to discuss about the kind of monopoly between Scandinavia and Germany, as SK and LH are both in StarAlliance, and codesharing. I was looking for a flight last week Stockholm-munich, and was quoted nothing less than 3600 SEK(around 430 EUR) that is very expensive, even with european standards. And apparently, no other competitor....
While we can see some kind of restrictions for code sharing for the US-UK market (due to US and EU regulators), i was wondering, even if the german-nordic market is much smaller, how do they decide to authorize or not all those code sharing agreements???
And the topic is valid for many others countries....
have a good day

Welcome onboard!
Not too many Scandinavians on the board so far.
As for your question:

Welcome onboard Frog. More and more people from Scandinavia is finding this place and a FT meeting in Scandinavian seems to come closer and closer. If you have follow this board for a while you know where I am working.

Yes I know that SK/LH has monopoly of the direct route between ARN-MUC and you are right that the best price is around 3600SEK(unless you are under the age of 26). Did you also check fares with AY and other airlines for MUC? AY has recently started operation on some lines starting in Sweden like ARN-MAN,ARN-BGO,ARN-OSL and ARN-MAD but has the price changed on these routes?

I fly a lot with AY - I they also have direct flights from ARN to BRU, CPH, DUB, LHR/LGW (codeshare with BA), MXP. I think also Luxembourg codeshare with someone. They used to fly ARN-MUC but that has been discontinued. And obviously they fly to a few cities in Finland.

I have no idea though, whether the competition has brought prices down on these routes. Would be interesting to know.

I am not Scandinavian based - but we face the same problems out of MUC to Scandinavia. Officially SK/LH don't have a monopoly as there still enough slots available at MUC as well as at CPH/ARN. But the problem is nobody wants to use these slots. So we're pretty much stuck with SK/LH. And yes the only European destination which is more expensive than Scandinavia is London (Business fares only). Eco fares are a bargain to LON due to heavy competition. And don't expect any improvements in the near future. LH/SK will probably cooperate even more than today. Just look at SK's half year results and you see they are in deep trouble.
