Offload Question

On Friday I was scheduled on SK1541 CPH to MAN. When I got to the gate I was approached and asked if I would like to be offloaded and sent via HEL. Just for once I thought I would give it a go - I had nothing scheduled for the afternoon and €300 for a detour seemed fair enough.

Anyway the detour was on Blue 1 in Y to HEL and then on Finnair in Y to MAN.

I made the journey no problem but unfortunately my bags didn't and I have had the delights of trying to get someone from BA baggage services to be helpful - I will never complain about SAS service quality again . Anyway bags were eventually delivered this afternoon at 18:00. This is a bit of a problem as the clothes I need to wear for a meeting tomorrow were in the case and need washing and ironing.

Anyway, my question - I was originally booked in Economy Flex (Extra???) on the direct flight. Should I get Eurobonus points for the direct flight as if I had travelled in Economy Extra or for the two legs of the rerouted journey (despite the fact that Finnair aren't Star Alliance members)? I am sure I am going to get into an extended dialog with the Eurobonus desk before I get the points sorted and I would appreciate any advice.

You'll get points for the paid (original) itinerary.

But ... you'll have to ask for them! (i.e., nothing will credit normally and you'll have to contact Customer Services).

cheers,

Henry

As others have already said, you should get EuroBonus points for your original routing. In addition, you should be able to get miles for your Finnair flight as well, if you are a member of any of the oneworld programmes.

Hmm... I wouldn't count on that. As far as I know, on the Dark Side (OW) the earnings are based on the ticketing carrier. I would be happy if someone could prove me wrong, though.

Tried it a ouple of times at ORD on Y tickets and EBG to be asked if I wanted to wait until next day (ORD-ARN-CPH). The answer: Nope - I am pretty sure it would not go down well at home.

What's a "ticketing carrier?" The times when I have ended up on a different carrier (different alliance) I have never had a problem getting miles for the flight I was actually on.

As part of the AA/BA transatlantic alliance deal, you cannot earn miles on BA or AA if you hit a certain combination of marketing/ticketing/operating carrier. Highly complex.

Strangely enough the UA/LH revenue share and pretty much all *A codeshares are exempt as is the NW/KL/AF skyteam deal. These earn normal status and bonus miles.

It ain't that complex. On AA you always earn miles based on the ticketing carrier rather than the operating carrier. So an AA codeshare operated by BA is considered to be an American Airlines flight. An AY flight operated by SN (Brussels Airlines) who is not part of oneWorld is still considered as a AY flight and elible for 100% bonus miles. Much more straight forward in my opinion.

There is a complexity involved in Transatlantic flights operated from UK to US and Iberia flights to Cuba (due to trade embargo).

BA and AY uses the same approach when it comes to what decides how many miles to earn for a given flight.

I meant the TATL from UK to US when I was talking complexity.

Works fine. I was once put on an AY flight BRU-HEL when the (first take) KF flight was canceled. I got miles for both, by presenting my AY Plus card at checkin in BRU and firing off a simple email to Eurobonus member service for the KF flight.
