5 new routes ex-ARN

According to sas.se (http://www.sas.se/sv/Erbjudanden_pri...destinationer/) 5 new European routes will be opened from ARN this spring.

First out will be ARN-MUC-ARN starting 12FEB2007 followed by Malaga 3x weekly (Mon, Wed, Sat), Las Palmas de Mallorca 1x weekly (Sat) and Glasgow 2x weekly (Mon, Fri) and finally Reykjavik ?x weekly.

ARN-MUC is SK2661 09:30 - 11:45 and MUC-ARN is SK2662 12:35 - 14:55.

According to the current schedule this will be good for outbound to MUC as there is one LH flight leaving 7:50 and one 12:15 but homebound there is one LH flight departing 9:05 and one 13:00 so 12:35 seems not optimal. But of course LH may adjust their schedule...

The other schedules are loaded yet but it I wonder if these are the high yield routes that SAS so desperately needs, maybe with the exception of KEF.

The target audience feels like weekend travellers and they won't buy the tickets unless they are CHEAP. That doesn't give SK money.

But anyway, fun that they open some new routes.

SAS is attacking Iceland! OSL-KEF is a huge success and they are increasing the frequency from OSL. Now ARN is up, I'm sure it will be a hit, too

Especially since the current schedule does not allow for transfers KEF-OSL-ARN in one day. Would be interesting to see the schedule published.

I believe ARN-MUC has been a great money-maker for LH, and now SK wants a part of it. Only 1 flight per day though, and not a great one either. However, it is not replacing an LH-flight, so the total # of flights per day goes up to 5 from 4, which is appreciated.

I don't know about connections in MUC to tell if the new SK flight would offer better (=shorter) connection times onto LH longhaul? Otherwise it seems (again) targeted for the leisure traveller as business people probably want to arrive to MUC somewhat earlier than 11:45 and leave later than 12:35?

Two other points:

MoWeFr are the same days as the ones when OSL-KEF operates. Peak travel days or lack of co-ordination?

Departure at 0705 means that the only same-day connections that will work are from Finland.

I have noticed something weird when I checked www.sas.se for seeing timetable and price of new ARN-KEF route.
I can book wholy FI(Icelandair) travel on www.sas.se.

Haven't SAS and FI broken their partnership in prior to inauguration of OSL-KEF route?

Nice with new routes.

Does anyone know if this means that they are cutting down on something else, or if they are actually expanding?

New routes - (almost) no C-class

I think it's sad that SAS is turning more and more into a leisure airline instead of being a full service airline. The only of the new routes that will have business class is the route to/from MUC. The routes to Glasgow, Reykjavik, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca will all only have Economy class. Somewhat understandable for Malaga and Mallorca perhaps, but why SAS skips business class on the flights to Glasgow and Reykjavik beats me. I'm sure there are business travellers to those destinations who would pay for C class.

ARN-MUC has been booming the last few years (used to fly that route at least 1-2 times a month Nov 2002 - May 2006) going from CRJ/ARJ operations to full time 735/320 ops everyday every flight. The 9.30 ARN-MUC makes sense as it connects to the LH longhauls going to the US. The 12.35 MUC-ARN is simply silly as LH 3018 leaves at 1300. LH 3018 is essential as the LH3019 return at 16.15 carries a lot of asian intercont pax and plenty of businessmen, so LH will keep the 3018 or maybe puch it a bit up.

Very early on (2003) SK used to operate LH 3019 at 0750 with SK 737s which then left for CPH from MUC. They should have used the same concept this time with some ARN-MUC-CPH-MUC-ARN operations to put in an a MUC-ARN departure between 15.45 and 19.30. The 15.45 flight is too early, the 19.30 always late by 20-30 mins during weekdays. A 18.00 flight would have been ideal to catch domestic/finnish SK/KF connection at ARN and useful for swedish businessmen returning.

I just wonder how long it will take before SAS abandons C class on intra-europeean flights altogether and just keep Y and M (sorry P) classes.

And this actually includes Swedish domestic routes. The ONLY connections westbound will be from TKU, TLL, TMP and VAA (based on the current schedules).
