advice on major differences between EB and M&M

All,

while trying to compare M&M and EB looks like there are the following major differencies:
- miles are valid for 5 years in EB instead of 3 years in M&M
- there is no such thing as flysmart (or something comparable) in EB

Have I missed something significant

If you are Silver or Gold in M&M miles do not expire. If you travel within Scandinavia and the Baltic region EB has low redemption levels (lower than FlySmart), but they do not have a permanent "last minute offer". M&M allows confirmed upgrades but they are extremely costly, EB does not, etc, etc...

If you want more help, I think you need to tell us a little more about what you want to get out of the programmes (status perks, cheap awards (from where to where), upgrades, partner awards, miles from credit cards...), there are many differences, and depending on what you are looking for they may or may not be major.

Oh well, I am looking for my friend re possible *A FFP for Russia - options are EB or M&M. she usually flies infrequently and the miles often expire. She will never make FTL so looks like EB will allow her to accumulate miles over 5 year period which helps. redemption is mainly to NA... flysmart is out of the question for her anyway as she require visa to travel to almost anywhere.

Other than the risk of UA going bankrupt, you may want to consider Mileage Plus. Lower redemption levels than both EB and M&M, and miles do not expire as long as there is any kind of account activity at least every 3 years.

that would be indeed an option, alas UA does not fly to Russia therefore does not have any reservation offices - which will create problems with award ordering.
