Compensation for Missing Baggage
Hi All,
My baggage was lost on the way from JTR (Santorini) to CPH with connections in ATH and FCO on June 30. Flights from JTR to ATH and from ATH to FCO were done by Aegean and flight from FCO to CPH by SAS. Connection time in Athens was about 1h 30 m and in Rome 2h.
When I came to the belt at Kastrup (probably, some 20 minutes after leaving the plane), it was not working, but the screen over it said that the luggage from Rome is delivered. Then it started working, but surprisngly only 5 or 6 bags appeared, there were no other passengers waiting for their suitcases and there was not line to missing lugagge claim desk. Anyway, I submitted a corresponding report at the SAS desk(SAS' SGH was a handling agent).
Six days have already passed since I've filed a claim, but the WorldTracer still says that tracing continues. Actually, I'm starting to worry, since there were lots of stuff in the suitcase (it was over 25 kg, almost all summer clothes of my family).
The questions I have are:
- is it still likely that the baggage may be found? As far as I know most part of delayed suitcases are delivered within one or two days. Have you experienced extended terms in this regard?
- does it make sense to call SGH and handling companies in Athens and Rome to check if they have any additional info?
- in case the baggage is not delivered within 21 days after filing a claim, how would the compensation be calculated? Is it always maximum amount (EUR 1200-1300) or may vary? The clothes in the suitcase were not just bought and I cannot attach scans of receipts for them. How long does it usually take to review the claim and pay the compensation?
- it could be possible that my suitcase was taken from the belt by someone else. Air company shall not be liable in this case, but do they usually review the video tapes from the luggage claim halls if they fail to locate a missed bag?
Your suggestions and help are much appreciated!

There is a standard amount that airlines will compensate in case your suitcase is lost. It is listed in conditions of carriage, and if I remember correctly it is 1156 SDR. If you are wondering what SDR is, it is Special Drawing Rights, a currency equivalent defined by IMF. Currently 1 SDR is about 1,39 USD. Any value above that you will need to get from your own insurance.
That the status has not been updated for 6 days is a fairly bad sign, and I would give them a call to ask what is happening. Normally, they should be able to check if the suitcase was loaded at each airport, and at least tell you if it left Athens, and arrived in Rome, if not the current whereabouts.

My suitcase found its way home.
On the 7th day of delay I've got a text message from WorldTracer asking to contact SAS in order to cinfirm that I received a bag, while I have received nothing at that time. I called SAS hoping to hear that my bag was already found, but theytold that they have no info at all on it and were just wondering why I don't contact them (should I?). Ok, I've been asked once again about how the suitcase looked like, what was inside and even what was the code to unlock the bag.
Fortunately, next morning the same SAS employee called me and told that the luggage was found. According to information I've got my suitcase was lost in Rome (in FCO they have serious troubles with baggage handling), after it was transferred to Copenhagen they also were not able to match the bag and my report immediately (and it also happens rather often basing on what I've heard from SAS).
Finally, the next day SAS delivered my suitcase to Moscow with its flight from CPH.
Happy End!
