Using only return leg of SK GO ticket.

Hi. It turns out that I can't use the outbound leg of a cheap SK ticket, but I would very much like to use the return leg. I realized that I have never tried to do this trick on SK. I did once on LH 3-4 years ago and it worked to my surprise. Does anybody has experience with this on SK?

I checked the ticket rules and can't find anything about using all the segments in order. Any opinions? Do I have to buy a new ticket.

good question. I only used an outbound segment recently and the ticketing employee mentioned that it was not a problem if I was not going to use the return segment and just to ignore it/not show up, but I don't know what official policy is.

Instead of taking the risk of cancellation of my inbound leg and standing in the airport with no ticket, I called EBG hotline in Sweden today and asked. I hit a very nice, polite and service minded agent, who tried her best (it took a quite a few minutes of consultation with her supervisor, while I was on hold). She cancelled the first leg of my reservation, while retaining the inbound leg, despite this being a non-refundable ticket. So now I hold a one way ticket, and I am safe. All at no cost. I have to say that this is a very good service from SK! I have no idea how standard it was, and whether they would offer the same if I were not an EBG.

(this contrasts with LH's practice, whom I have heard threatening passengers a few times that their credit cards will be charged extra fees, if they only use the first segment of tickets, and do a non-show on the inbound leg.)

The reason SK is more flexible than LH is their pricing structure. SK works with one-way fares within Europe whereas LH uses return fares (some exceptions of course). If you had bought your return as a one way you would have paid the same or less, so SK loses no revenue by cancelling your outbound. Instead they free up a seat for sale.
If the price of your return had been higher than your total ticket, then they must likely hadn't allowed this as it would be a way for you to cheat the system. Thus, I don't think SK is as flexible on intercontinental journeys where they don't work with one-way fares to the same extent.

experience has been exactly the same as yours. I believe it is even a SK policy to allow this on the European market as long as you cancel your outbound first.

Yes. I have based my high hopes for this exactly on the fare structure that seems to be extremely flexible with SK on European strucutre, essentially operating on one-way basis. This was one of the main reasons for switching from LO to SK for most of my flights. I hate all sorts of "not-combinable" fare restrictions on LO/LH and alikes.

You are also right that I would not expect this to happen on an intercontinental ticket. Fortunately for me my intercontinental trips are for most of the time quite predictable. It is the let's schedule a meeting in "Berlin" in 3 days in advance that tends to kill my European itineraries. I think it is good that SK has a fare structure that facilitates easy changes quite well. I also noticed, that, in principle, DY has easily changeable tickets, etc. So in this sense Scandinavian market seems healthy.

Has never been an issue with SAS - at least not intra-Europe.

This weekend my wife couldn't use her outbound leg, which we were going to do together in the samme booking, due to a business trip, so to be sure, I told the agent this at my check in. She said thank you for telling. And no problems at our common return flight.
