They want to keep others (from 4.01 press release, sasgrup.net):

"After the transaction the SAS Group will have 24 MD-80's in operation out of a total of 191 Aircraft. The remaining MD-80 Aircraft are intended to be kept in SAS operation as inexpensive reliable Aircraft, as well as Aircraft to manage the seasonality effect in the Nordic region."

As strange as it may sound, I actually like the MD80/90's unless, of course, you end up in the very back so quite sad to see these go...

This was announced a couple of months ago! They are selling 18 they have in storage (mostly in France). The first 4 MD82 have already been delivered!
The deal is for 13 MD82 and 5 MD87s and is worth around 200M SEK. The MD87s will leave the fleet for good later this spring when the last 2 goes to City Airline in Gothenburg.

The remaining MDs should be in service until 2014-2015

Yep, they are great planes. And the SAS seats on them are very very comfortable with great legroom, nothing like the seats on the newer 737 NGs which have quite abysmal seat pitch.

Shame the MD-90 and B717 didn't sell, as they are basically just modernized versions of the same great design. I'd take them any day over a boring narrow body Boeing or Airbus.

I agree the worst aircraft are the 737-800 - impossible legspace even up front...
Far prefer MD-80's usually operated by SAS Denmark, which also serves coke zero (unlike the swedish operated flights)^

The worst is with no doubt the super narrow CRJ where you can't even open your newspaper. Give me back the wonderful mad dogs.

Now if the CRJ could go supersonic... then nobody would complain about not being able to open their newspapers

I find the -600 and -700 versions the worst, for sure! Many of the -800s have nice new slim seats which improve the pitch and feel wider. Also, the exit row seats on the -800s are great! The new 737-800s with winglets are also still feeling brand new and fresh, which you can't say about the -600s.

It's really a shame to see the MD-80s disappearing - the best intra-European flight experience in my mind, especially domestic Sweden where you normally can end up in any of the front rows without paying business class prices.

Not trying to be funny here, but it's a given fact that Mick O is amongst the single largest customers at Boeing when it comes to the B737 and by pure chance he runs one of the largest LCC airlines in the world. The LCC's decides (indirectly) what and how the new B737s are going to be like.

So far Rynkarii (I believe some of my Finnish colleagues call the airline) have over 183 of them in route so there could be something on the subject

Anyway, IMO the B737 is not what it used to be, and I'll take a MD80 anyday over these horrible 737's

Funny that you mention this because there are five 717 in the Swedish aircraft registry since March 10th.

Anyone with an idea what SAS plans to do with these 717?
