When are the sales on in SF?

The wife and I want to visit San Francisco in September or October 2009.

Can anyone assist as to when the big stores have their sales at that time of year? From memory, the sales seem to coincide with public holidays.

Thanks in advance

It seems like most major stores have been having chronic large sales (to the point that no one expects to pay retail price on most things) for some time, just to get people in the door.

my experience of sales over 20+ years here

There are sales on a regular basis - economy notwithstanding, there are always some kind of sales for medium dept stores (macy's) and more timed sales for upscale ones. (bloomingdales)

As far as the fall , September will likely bring a back to school sale around the first week of September; October will have a Columbus Day sale mid month. As to whether these will be any better than the regular weekly sales I can't say.

Also there are very often %off coupons for stores like Macy's in the local newspaper (often good on merchandise that is already on sale).

extra percent off for out of town tourist

sales usually start thursdays. Macys, Bloomingdales give an extra 11 or 12% off if you go to customer service dept and show your room key to them. Combine the extra 12% off with the extra 40% off bloomingdales offer on their sales day and it's a red hot shopping experience!
