is it relatively safe to ride the BART at night?

Just wondering. I would be going from the Montgomery street station downtown to the Burlingame/SFO stop at about 9:30pm tonight. I am a mid-30s female.

Is this recommended? I would certainly do this in NYC where I lived for six years, but there are usually a lot of people on the train then too.

You should be fine. The only real issues that I'm aware of on BART is entering/exiting some of the stations particularly in parts of the East Bay. If you are exiting @ SFO proper, no worries.

I agree that you should have no problem. There should be a lot of people on the trains and at the stations. I would be careful walking to a car or at any remote BART location.

And even in many of the remote BART stations you'd be fine. I've often come home to Union City after 11 pm with no problems. It's only certain stations where you have to be careful.

There is usually a crowd of homeless folks hanging out on the street at the entrance to the Montgomery station, so you might be harassed for spare change as you walk in. Once you're in the system, you shouldn't have any problems.

I agree with the above. Considering how many people take BART, crime on the system is very low.

I'm a female who's just a little on the wrong side of 40, and I take BART late at night for most of my red-eyes. I've never had a problem or felt uncomfortable. As others mentioned, there should be a fair amount of people on the train with you.

My office is right near one of the stairways up from the Montgomery BART stattion; I don't hesistate to use it at night, and the only vagrant hassles I've ever had were really low key and ended with a "No, sorry!" from me, and that was it. I wouldn't hesitate to use it if you're headed SFO-Downtown SF.

All of BART is fine by day. The only BART station I feel really uncomfortable at night around is MacArthur, in Oakland (I admit, I haven't been to them all.) However, walking away from MacArthur, down College Ave., is fine. I just don't like the other directions. Sometimes 16th St/Mission is a little threatening, but it's really variable, depending on how much of a crowd is upstairs... I don't hesitate to go there in any case. Civic Center is empty and unpleasant at night. I used to have an office near it, so I don't feel too threatened, but some might. Market St. is well-lit, but I wouldn't walk north or south much.

Powell, Montgomery and Embarcadero are fine. (I probably wouldn't get off at West Oakland at night, either, but no hotels or touristic stuff is nearby)

Hope you have a good trip; thanks for asking, and enjoy our city!

If i remember correctly, I read somewhere that you can request an escort to your car. I also have no problems with using bart at night. The only ones I'd recommend avoiding at night is possibly civic center, mission street/16th/24th, and west oakland as they are located in primarily crime ridden areas. However if you are still worried about safety at night, the trains are recorded and you can always sit at the first car which holds the operator.
